Distribution Of
Magazines
Q Magazine
 Q magazine is not a free sheet magazine so it is one of very few music
magazines left that you have to pay for.
 You can find Q magazine in news agents and via subscription.
 Q magazine is a monthly distributed magazine since 1986 and is the UK’s
most popular music magazine.
 This magazine is still being distributed and thriving due to the features it
includes such as a very wide reviews section which gives it an edge over all
over magazines.
 The target audience is aimed at people aged 30 to 40 years of age which is
the average age for the population of the UK.
Publishers
 Publishers are the institutions that produce the magazine. In the UK there are
four large publishers, and a number of smaller institutions. The main four are
EMAP Bauer, NatMag, Conde Nast and IPC. The publishers will control the
editorial content and design of the magazine.
 Bauer Media Group is a large European-based media company, headquartered
in Hamburg, Germany.
 This company manages a portfolio of more than 600 magazines, over 400
digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world. The portfolio
extends to include print shops, postal, distribution and marketing services.
 Bauer Media Group has a workforce of approximately 11,000 employees in 17
countries. This is the company that Publishes Q magazine.
Distribution networks
 Each publisher uses a network of distributors, who manage the flow of
magazines from the printer to the final newsstand, where the magazine is
sold.
 Music Magazines are becoming more harder to get but they are still out there
and company’s use different distribution methods such as:
 Shops such as news agents
 College/Universities can display magazines in their library's
 Websites can contain online magazines
 Social networking can have adverts or links on them
 Hand outs where people go door to door giving free sheets.
Subscription- postal / electronic
 Regular readers of magazines, particularly niche publications, may wish to
subscribe to a number of issues, and have the magazine regularly posted to
them, usually at a heavily discounted price.
 The perks of subscribing to music magazines are:
 You don’t have to travel to the shops or newsstand
 You get the magazine earlier than everyone else
 Also if it is digital you can read it instantly on your device such as a kindle fire
 Also once you receive it on a digital device you are able to download load it
on multiple devices
 Finally you can access it anywhere once downloaded
Apps
 Many magazines now have smartphone or iPad apps with some or all of the
content available in the hard copy of the magazine. These may be linked via a
smart QR code on the front cover of a magazine.
 These apps can be very useful as it is basically the website but with more
features.
 These apps are also accessible everywhere if you have the app on your phone
tablet etc.
