3. DEFINATION
 A Coating is a covering layer of a particular material
that is applied to the surface of an object (the
substrsate)
 Tablet coating involves application of a coating
materials to the exterior of a tablet,and is done using
different polymers.
 The coating solution is a blend of polymer,plasticizer,
colorant and solvent.

Polyvinyl chloride(PVC)
Plasticizer are added to the polymer used as film coating agents
in order to make the polymer pliable and soft.

6. SUGAR COATING
 Sugar coating is the most conventional multi step coating
Process.
 As the name suggests this process involves application of sugar
(sucrose) based on coating solution to the tablets.
 It is carried out in coating pan having variable capacities and
mounted at an angle of 40

7. FILM COATING
 Single stage process, which involves spraying a coating solution.
 The solution is sprayed onto a rotating tablet bed followed by
drying, which facilitates the removal of the solvent leaving behind
the deposition of thin film of coating materials around each tablet.
 In film coating ,coating materials is applied to tablet about 2-3% of
wt. of uncoated tablets.

8. ENTERIC COATING
 An enteric coating is a barrier that controls the location of oral
medication in the digestive system where it is absorbed.
 The word “enteric” indicates the small intestine.
 These are polymer coatings which are insoluble at low pH, but soluble
at high pH.
 Enteric coatings are prepared from gastric resistant polymers.

10. WHY COATING IS DONE
 A coating is done for the purpose of may be functional or
decorative or both.
 It is done for the protection of the subtrate materials or to
improve its mechanical,tribiological or other physical properties.
 Thickness of coating is great parameter which affects the
properties.
 Functional purpose,to mask unpleasant odours and tastes or to
protect drugs from environmental factors.
