2. About Rube Goldberg
Reuben Garrett Lucius Goldberg was born on 4th of July, 1883. Rube had multiple jobs, he
was an American cartoonist, a sculptor, an author, an inventor and a news reporter.
Rube was famous for his Rube Goldberg machines that he mentioned in his many
successful cartoons he drew back in the 1920’s.
Rube lived in San Francisco for 44 years and then moved to New York City for the rest of
his life to work for the Evening Mail.
He started his drawing passion when he was 4 and began tracing cartoons from books
but his father thought that drawing was useless and told him to be an engineer because
drawing doesn’t earn a lot of money for his living.
When he reached 11 he started taking professional art lessons at Lowell High school.
3. Personal Life
Reuben married Irma Seeman and had two sons ,Thomas and George Goldberg.
He was 3rd of 7 children but unfortunately 3 of them passed away.
Rube’s wife was later remembered as ‘mother of the national cartoonists society’ due to
a title for a honorary Reuben award she received.
While Thomas flourished working as a painter, George successfully became a writer and
producer.
Rube passed away in Hawthorne, New York on December 7,1970 while he was 87 years
old.
4. Careers
Rube graduated with a degree of engineering from the University of California,
Berkley in 1904. After graduating he went to work as an engineer for the San
Francisco Water and Sewage Department for a reasonable price of $100($2700
in today’s money)each month but after 6 months he decided to quit
engineering job, so he could continue his passion for drawing and cartooning.
Rube’s new job was at the San Francisco Chronicle to be a sports cartoonist for
only $8 but after a year he left to work at the San Francisco Bulletin.
In 1907 he moved to New York City and worked for several newspapers until1938 and
gave up cartooning but continued to write articles and stories
