Rube Goldberg was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, and engineer born in 1883 in San Francisco. He is known for creating ridiculously complex machines to perform simple tasks. One of his famous inventions was the "self-operating napkin" which used a series of steps including a soup spoon, parrot, and skyrocket to wipe a chin. Throughout his career, Goldberg was fascinated by technology but liked to make easy things difficult through absurdly complicated contraptions. He received awards such as the Pulitzer Prize and died in 1970, leaving behind his wife and two sons.
