2. Biography
• Antonio Lopez was a fashion illustrator, born in Utuado , Puerto Rico
on February 11th, 1943. His mother was a dressmaker, his father
sculpted mannequins. His family migrated to New York when he was
seven years old. He went to school there where he gained the
friendship and admiration of other children as well as teachers because
of his talent. He was awarded a scholarship to the Traphagen School of
Fashion, at the age of twelve.“Lopez was encouraged to attend the
High School of Art and Design by his junior high school art teacher
and the Fashion Institute of technology while attending the F.I.T. he
began an internship at Women’s Wear Daily.

cultural references to subjects

• He ‘invented’ the new model: not the perfect pretty girl, but the girl
with attitude, sex and a portion of craziness, later called Antonio’s
Girls . “Healthy wasn’t his thing. He wanted exotic, weird, a little
insane.”
