2. About Rube Goldberg
Rube Goldberg was born in July 4, 1885 in California. He then sadly died in December 7, 1970 in
Hawthorn New York ( was 87 years old).
Rube Goldberg started drawing when he was four years old and wanted to be a cartoonist then.
But his father, Max, persuaded him to do engineering.
After all the engineering, he left his job to become his actual dream, a cartoonist. He created lots
of cartoons like Lala Palooza.
Then he drew and created a machine called an â Automatic Weight- Reducing Machine.
This is just a brief biography about him.
3. Family
Rube Goldbergâs father was called Max. His father was the one who persuaded Rube Goldberg
to study engineering. He was a police and a fire commissioner. He was engaged in real estate,
banking and politics.
Rube Goldbergâs mother was called Hannah, who sadly died when Rube Goldberg was a
teenager. Rube Goldberg had an older brother called Garrett and two younger siblings called
Walter and Lilian.
Later on, he was married Irma Seeman, with whom they had two children called George and
Thomas. They then changed their last name to âGeorge.â
4. Education
Rube Goldbergâs school that he went to was called Lowell High School. He then graduated in
1900.
Then, Rube Goldberg went Mining Engineering in University in California at Berkeley for
engineering studies.
In 1904, Rube Goldberg earned his bachelorâs degree in engineering. His father persuaded him
to study engineering instead of drawing cartoons.
Then, when he left his job, he went to become a cartoonist.

5. Engineering
Rube Goldberg worked at San Francisco City Engineer's office, water sewer department. He was
responsible for designing sewer system plans around San Francisco. He was paid $100, monthly
paycheck, which, at that time, was a high-paying job for a fresh graduate.
Despite that, Rube Goldberg was restless.
Rube Goldberg only stayed at his job only for a couple of months. Then his job exposed him to
the corrupted political scenario. But Rube Goldberg refused to pledge his allegiance to corrupt
politicians.
Finally, it propelled the jaded Rube Goldberg back to the direction he wanted to take since the
beginning.
6. Cartoonist
After left his job, worked at the San Francisco Chronicle as an art assistant, with the intention of
being a professional cartoonist. With his humor and zest for drawing cartoons revived, Rube
submitted 1 cartoon after another to the newspaper.
But, he would find his work in the office trash bin. there were rare instances when his editor
would approve one of his creations for publication. However, it usually called for a tradeoff-Rube
would have the satisfaction of seeing his work in print in exchange for doing less than pleasant
office tasks. Sometimes, he would be asked for cleaning the floors and sort through pictures
from the morgue.
Here are the cartoons he made. Boob McNutt, Doc Wright, Lala Pazoola and The Barodik.
After that, he invented a machine called an â Automatic Weight- Reducing Machine.â It was made
up of a donut, bomb, wax balloon and a hot stove.
7. Other facts
â˘Rube Goldberg wrote two popular books called â How to remove the cotton from a bottle of
Aspirin.â (1959) and â Rube Goldberg vs the Machine age.â (1968).
â˘Rube Goldberg was the first cartoonist to have his work exhibited at the National Museum of
American History in Washington in 1970.
â˘Rube Goldberg produced several cartoon series - the most popular ones were Mike and Ike,
Boob McNutt, Lunatics I Have Met, They all Looked Good When They Are Far Away and Foolish
Questions.
