Duties:
Mr Sharp had full responsibility for Cooperheat Middle East’s Advanced Inspection
Services Division for the Middle East region. This area included Saudi Arabia, The United
Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Pakistan, India and Central Asia
(Kazakhstan, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan etc.), Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia.
Mr Sharp’s primary responsibilities included general management of the division as well
as business development.
During 2009, due to restructuring of Stork Technical Services, Malaysia, New Zealand,
Australia and the Caspian regions were no longer part of Mr Sharp’s responsibilities

Outside of the Ultrasonic Technique Mr Sharp has also exercised direct management
responsibility for tube testing, (IRIS, Eddy Current, Remote Eddy Current and Flux
Leakage), Acoustic Emission Testing of Crude Oil Storage Tanks, Magnetic Flux Leakage
of tank floors and various other inspection services.

A number of the projects listed above included plant integrity assessment, Fitness for
Service and Remaining Life Assessment as well as RBI.
During this time Mr Sharp has also conducted theoretical and practical training courses in
ToFD and Automated Ultrasonic Testing on behalf of RTD in the Netherlands and for
Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia as well as several in house training courses.
Mr Sharp has extensive experience and knowledge in all aspects of managing large
projects both during manufacturing and construction and in the in-service inspection
environment. He has extensive speciality knowledge and experience in automated
ultrasonic testing and has many years specific experience in the Time of Flight Diffraction
technique.
Mr Sharp has gained exhaustive experience in the detection, recording, sizing, monitoring
and reporting of Hydrogen Damage in pressure vessels and piping systems.
Some recent highlights include:
Direct involvement in the inspection of over 110 pressure vessels and 20 piping systems
for Low Temperature Hydrogen Attack, using a combination of Automated Ultrasonic
Techniques as a single project. His involvement in this project included project
management, procedure development, validations and review and final interpretation and
disposition of all ultrasonic data showing evidence of material degradation as well as
review and approval of all reports. The temperature of inspected equipment ranged from
ambient to 180° C. This project included Fitness for Service and Remaining Life
Assessment of all of the pressure vessels and ping systems inspected.
Multi channel automated ultrasonic inspection of 30 vessels during manufacture to ASME
VIII in accordance with the requirements of ASME Code Case 2235. Wall thickness range
55 to 150 mm.
Procedure development, validation and training & qualification of personnel and auditing
for AUT of over 5 000 welds during manufacture in the thickness range of 9 to 26 mm.
ToFD inspection of heavy wall clad reactors in a Saudi Arabian petroleum refinery, the
reactor wall was in excess of 300mm.
Eddy Current Testing of 190 000 heat exchanger tubes for manufacturing defects.
Automated ultrasonic inspection and online monitoring of cryogenic vessel at temperature
of –48° C
Procedure development, data interpretation and reporting in excess of 100 items of
equipment for HTHA including assessments done for SABIC – SAFCO, Saudi Aramco
and TAKREER.

During Mr Sharp's 36 years in the inspection industry he has gained extensive experience
in the interpretation and application of a wide range of international codes and standards.

DUTIES: Joined the company with the responsibility of establishing a company
dedicated to providing a highly professional service in advanced technology,
non destructive testing and developing a market for these services.
In line with his responsibilities, trading agreements were negotiated with
various international companies who provided either suitable equipment or
suitable services.
Contracts were negotiated with a number of major companies, including
Sasol Synthetic Fuels, Sasol Chemical Industries, SAPREF, NATREF,
Caltex, Mossgas, AECI, SAPPI, Eskom and Shell MDS - Malaysia,
Services, which were, offered Included:
 Automated ultrasonic testing including Time of Flight Diffraction, automated
code compliant pulse echo, colour graphic corrosion monitoring and
hydrogen damage assessment.
 Alternating current potential drop techniques.
 Various conventional NDT methods.
 Welding inspection.
 Expediting.
 High and Low temperature Hydrogen Attack Assessment
Whilst Mr Sharp has directed the company he has also gained extensive hands-on
experience in all of the above techniques and was regularly involved with any non-routine
inspection work.
He also developed and validated procedures in various NDT methods on an ongoing
basis, as well as being directly involved in the development and training of personnel.
Most of the inspection carried out by Mr Sharp was on petrochemical plants and he
developed procedures and techniques for the detection and evaluation of the following
discontinuities as well as propagation monitoring in piping and pressure vessels, as well
as implementation of the same:

1978 - 1990
EMPLOYER: L & C Steinmuller (Africa)
POSITION: Quality Assurance Manager
DUTIES: Joined the company as NDT technician and was promoted through various
positions. In June 1984 was promoted to Group NDT Manager, reporting
directly to the General Manager, Quality Assurance Division.
In March 1988, was appointed as Manager Inspection and Engineering
Services, a Government Approved Inspection Authority in accordance with the
Machinery and Occupational Safety Act of 1983. The Department of Mineral
and Energy Affairs in accordance with the mines and works act further
approved Steinmuller Inspection and Engineering as an Inspection Authority.
Mr Sharp retained full functional responsibility for this department, which
operated from independent offices in Randburg, with a branch office in
Amanzimtoti. This department operated as a profit centre along the lines of a
strategic business unit.
In January 1990, Mr Sharp was promoted to the position of QA Manager
based at the Steinmuller (Africa) (Pty) Ltd Chamdor works. Mr Sharp had full
functional responsibility for the Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Non
Destructive Testing Departments including Vendor Surveillance.
Mr Sharp retained his responsibility for Steinmuller Inspection & Engineering
Services.
At that stage Mr Sharp was responsible for a staff compliment of  140.
Major contracts in which Mr Sharp had a direct involvement while employed by
Steinmuller (Africa) (Pty) Ltd included:
 Manufacture and erection of boiler plant for Kriel Power Station.
 Manufacture and erection of boiler plant for Duvha Power Station.
 Manufacture and erection of boiler plant for Tutuka Power Station.
 Erection of boiler plant for Matimba Power Station.
 Manufacture and erection of splitter column for Polypropylene plant for
Sasol Synthetic Fuels.
 Erection of HP pipework on Kendal Power Station.
 Erection of boiler plant on Sasol III.
 Maintenance contracts on various Eskom sites.
 Supply and management of NDT technicians and equipment to ESKOM’s
Koeberg Nuclear Power Station

 Manufacture and erection of pressure vessels and heat exchangers for
various petrochemical and chemical plants.
 Maintenance and in-service inspection on petrochemical plants.
1977 - 1978
EMPLOYER : CHEL Engineering
POSITION : NDT Technician
DUTIES : Carried out UT, RT, MT and PT on welding, forgings and casting.
These functions were primarily carried out on pressure vessels,
pipelines and shipping, although limited work was also carried out on
light aircraft. Extensive in-service inspection was carried out on
petroleum pipelines.
1976 - 1977
EMPLOYER : South African Bureau of Standards
POSITION : NDT Technician
DUTIES: Joined the company as an NDT technician on a contract basis.
Duties included UT, RT, MT and PT. Carried out these NDT
disciplines primarily on the penstock of the Steenbras Dam Pump
Storage Scheme during manufacture.
1975 - 1976
EMPLOYER: South African Iron and Steel Industries
POSITION: Laboratory Assistant
DUTIES: Joined the company as a laboratory assistant in the metallurgical
laboratories. Transferred to the NDT section as a trainee. Received
training in UT, RT and MT. UT received the most emphasis. Worked on
castings and weldments, as well as carrying out corrosion monitoring on
pipelines.

  • 6. 6 A number of the projects listed above included plant integrity assessment, Fitness for Service and Remaining Life Assessment as well as RBI. During this time Mr Sharp has also conducted theoretical and practical training courses in ToFD and Automated Ultrasonic Testing on behalf of RTD in the Netherlands and for Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia as well as several in house training courses. Mr Sharp has extensive experience and knowledge in all aspects of managing large projects both during manufacturing and construction and in the in-service inspection environment. He has extensive speciality knowledge and experience in automated ultrasonic testing and has many years specific experience in the Time of Flight Diffraction technique. Mr Sharp has gained exhaustive experience in the detection, recording, sizing, monitoring and reporting of Hydrogen Damage in pressure vessels and piping systems. Some recent highlights include: Direct involvement in the inspection of over 110 pressure vessels and 20 piping systems for Low Temperature Hydrogen Attack, using a combination of Automated Ultrasonic Techniques as a single project. His involvement in this project included project management, procedure development, validations and review and final interpretation and disposition of all ultrasonic data showing evidence of material degradation as well as review and approval of all reports. The temperature of inspected equipment ranged from ambient to 180° C. This project included Fitness for Service and Remaining Life Assessment of all of the pressure vessels and ping systems inspected. Multi channel automated ultrasonic inspection of 30 vessels during manufacture to ASME VIII in accordance with the requirements of ASME Code Case 2235. Wall thickness range 55 to 150 mm. Procedure development, validation and training & qualification of personnel and auditing for AUT of over 5 000 welds during manufacture in the thickness range of 9 to 26 mm. ToFD inspection of heavy wall clad reactors in a Saudi Arabian petroleum refinery, the reactor wall was in excess of 300mm. Eddy Current Testing of 190 000 heat exchanger tubes for manufacturing defects. Automated ultrasonic inspection and online monitoring of cryogenic vessel at temperature of –48° C Procedure development, data interpretation and reporting in excess of 100 items of equipment for HTHA including assessments done for SABIC – SAFCO, Saudi Aramco and TAKREER.
  • 7. 7 During Mr Sharp's 36 years in the inspection industry he has gained extensive experience in the interpretation and application of a wide range of international codes and standards.   • 9. 9 1990 - 1995 EMPLOYER :SA X-Ray (Pty) Ltd / SA Inspection Services (Pty) Ltd POSITION: Managing Director DUTIES: Joined the company with the responsibility of establishing a company dedicated to providing a highly professional service in advanced technology, non destructive testing and developing a market for these services. In line with his responsibilities, trading agreements were negotiated with various international companies who provided either suitable equipment or suitable services. Contracts were negotiated with a number of major companies, including Sasol Synthetic Fuels, Sasol Chemical Industries, SAPREF, NATREF, Caltex, Mossgas, AECI, SAPPI, Eskom and Shell MDS - Malaysia, Services, which were, offered Included:  Automated ultrasonic testing including Time of Flight Diffraction, automated code compliant pulse echo, colour graphic corrosion monitoring and hydrogen damage assessment.  Alternating current potential drop techniques.  Various conventional NDT methods.  Welding inspection.  Expediting.  High and Low temperature Hydrogen Attack Assessment Whilst Mr Sharp has directed the company he has also gained extensive hands-on experience in all of the above techniques and was regularly involved with any non-routine inspection work. He also developed and validated procedures in various NDT methods on an ongoing basis, as well as being directly involved in the development and training of personnel. In June 1984 was promoted to Group NDT Manager, reporting directly to the General Manager, Quality Assurance Division. In March 1988, was appointed as Manager Inspection and Engineering Services, a Government Approved Inspection Authority in accordance with the Machinery and Occupational Safety Act of 1983. The Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs in accordance with the mines and works act further approved Steinmuller Inspection and Engineering as an Inspection Authority. Mr Sharp retained full functional responsibility for this department, which operated from independent offices in Randburg, with a branch office in Amanzimtoti. This department operated as a profit centre along the lines of a strategic business unit. In January 1990, Mr Sharp was promoted to the position of QA Manager based at the Steinmuller (Africa) (Pty) Ltd Chamdor works. Mr Sharp had full functional responsibility for the Quality Assurance, Quality Control and Non Destructive Testing Departments including Vendor Surveillance. Mr Sharp retained his responsibility for Steinmuller Inspection & Engineering Services. At that stage Mr Sharp was responsible for a staff compliment of  140. Major contracts in which Mr Sharp had a direct involvement while employed by Steinmuller (Africa) (Pty) Ltd included:  Manufacture and erection of boiler plant for Kriel Power Station.  Manufacture and erection of boiler plant for Duvha Power Station.  Manufacture and erection of boiler plant for Tutuka Power Station.  Erection of boiler plant for Matimba Power Station.  Manufacture and erection of splitter column for Polypropylene plant for Sasol Synthetic Fuels.  Erection of HP pipework on Kendal Power Station.  Erection of boiler plant on Sasol III.  Maintenance contracts on various Eskom sites.  Supply and management of NDT technicians and equipment to ESKOM’s Koeberg Nuclear Power Station
  • 11. 11  Manufacture and erection of pressure vessels and heat exchangers for various petrochemical and chemical plants.  Maintenance and in-service inspection on petrochemical plants. 1977 - 1978 EMPLOYER : CHEL Engineering POSITION : NDT Technician DUTIES : Carried out UT, RT, MT and PT on welding, forgings and casting. These functions were primarily carried out on pressure vessels, pipelines and shipping, although limited work was also carried out on light aircraft. Extensive in-service inspection was carried out on petroleum pipelines. 1976 - 1977 EMPLOYER : South African Bureau of Standards POSITION : NDT Technician DUTIES: Joined the company as an NDT technician on a contract basis. Duties included UT, RT, MT and PT. Carried out these NDT disciplines primarily on the penstock of the Steenbras Dam Pump Storage Scheme during manufacture. 1975 - 1976 EMPLOYER: South African Iron and Steel Industries POSITION: Laboratory Assistant DUTIES: Joined the company as a laboratory assistant in the metallurgical laboratories. Transferred to the NDT section as a trainee. Received training in UT, RT and MT. UT received the most emphasis. Worked on castings and weldments, as well as carrying out corrosion monitoring on pipelines.
