Universal Studios Inc. (also known as Universal
Pictures), is an American film studio, owned by
Comcast through its wholly owned subsidiary NBC
Universal, and is one of Hollywood's "Big Six" film
studios.
Universal Pictures was founded in 1912, being the
third oldest film studio in the world. In 2012, it
celebrated its 100 year anniversary. In 2011,
Universal films earned revenue of over $4 billion.
3.
It owns several movie franchises that are very popular
worldwide, including: “Jurassic Park”, “The Mummy”,
“The Fast and the furious” and the “Bourne” films. It
has also produced successful films like “Scarface”,
“Cinderella Man” and “Gladiator”.
Since my film revolves around Schizophrenia, it was
important for me to see if the institution I chose would
be willing to produce my film and market it the right
way. There are several reasons as to why I have chosen
Universal Pictures as the media institution for my
psychological thriller film.
4.
First of all, this film studio produced the 1960 film by Alfred
Hitchcock, “Psycho”. The film was nominated for 4 Academy
awards, also creating a worldwide recognition for the genre. It
is known as one of the most iconic films of all time. Universal
Pictures has also produced and/or distributed three
psychological thriller/drama films including “The Soloist”,
“Dream House” and “A Beautiful Mind”. This studio is also
associated with film studios like Cross creek pictures and
Phoenix pictures that have produced the psychological thriller
films: “Black Swan” and “Shutter Island”. Universal has a
history of producing horror films including “The Raven”,
“Dracula” and “Frankenstein”. And in recent times, it has
produced “Jaws”, “The Ring”, “Child’s Play” and “Devil”.
Since the psychological thriller genre is a sub-genre of horror, it
was important to see if the institution of my choice would,
again, be willing to produce my film and market it properly.
6.
In the early 1950s, Universal set up its own distribution
company in France, and in the late 1960s, the company also
started a production company in Paris, Universal Productions
France S.A., although sometimes credited by the name of the
distribution company, Universal Pictures France. Except for the
two first films it produced, Claude Chabrol's Le scandale
(English title The Champagne Murders) and Romain Gary's Les
oiseaux vont mourir au Pérou (English title Birds in Peru), it
was only involved in French or other European co-productions,
the most noticeable ones being Louis Malle's Lacombe, Lucien,
Bertrand Blier's Les Valseuses (English title Going Places), and
Fred Zinnemann's The Day of the Jackal. It was only involved
in approximately 20 French film productions. In the early 1970s,
the unit was incorporated into the French Cinema International
Corporation arm.
