- Thank you so much, Hanna and thank you everyone for joining us today! I will now be discussing student mobility from South Korea in the context of international education in the U.S and Canada. As is evident from the graph the enrollment of South Korean students in the U.S. peaked during 2008 and 09 with over 75,000 South Korean students enrolling in the U.S. But the growth has been on a steady decline since 2011-12. One factor contributing to this decline could be a large Korean population opting to study in Japan and China- which are closer, cheaper (particularly in the case of China), and that could potentially help career-wise in terms of Asia-focused careers. Additionally, Korean students are also choosing to simply stay home; since more recently the government has been investing heavily in bringing the quality of higher education up to more completive standards by investing in plans such as “World Class University.”
- According to latest IIE Open Doors report, with over 58,000 students from South Korea in the U.S. Korea is amongst the leading places of origin for international students in the U.S. In terms of numbers it recently overtook Saudi Arabia as the third leading place of origin. According to UNESCO Institute of Statistics, Japan is currently the second leading destination for South Korean students after U.S. Japan’s pull is largely driven by economic factors – students are lured by more affordable options than in the West. Moreover Japan’s focus to promote practical learning through a science and engineering focused curriculum makes Japan an attractive destination for South Korean students. - Now let’s take a look at student mobility into Canada. The graph depicts a 4% increase in the Year on Year growth of South Korean students in the year 2015. Canada is increasingly becoming popular as a destination for International students – the country has a remarkable reputation for quality of education. Additionally factors such as reputation of the country as tolerant and safe, the affordability of education in Canada and the opportunities that Canada gives to international students to be welcomed on a more permanent basis – all contribute to the rise of Canada as popular destination of study among South Korean students. IRCC data for Canada includes students from Canada at all levels *Student numbers are based on valid study permits and work permits (Add this to the slide)
- The international student population in Canada is exceptionally diverse, with over 180 countries represented in 2015. Despite the diversity, over 60% originate from the top five countries of citizenship. Between 2012 and 2014 the population of the top five countries remained relatively unchanged however 2015 saw a decline in the number of Saudi Arabian students, bringing the U.S. into the top five. South Korea represents nearly 6% of International students in Canada. Note: Due to rounding, percentages may not add to 100%.
