4. EDUCATION
Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the
acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.
Education frequently takes place under the guidance of
educators, however learners can also educate themselves.
Education can take place in formal or informal settings and
any experience that has a formative effect on the way one
thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational.
5. EDUCATION: ITS ETYMOLOGICAL DEWATION
Etymologically, the word “Education” is derived from the
Latin words “Educare” and “Educere”.
Educare refers to “to bring up” or “to nourish”, whereas
the word “Educere" means to “to bring forth” or “to drag
out”.
Some others believe that the word his been derived from
another Latin word “Educantum” which has two
components. “E” implies a movement from inward to
outward and “duco” refers to developing or progressing.
An analysis of these words reveal that education aims at
providing a learner or a child a nourishing environment to
bring out and develop the latent potentiality hidden inside
him.
6. Education is the process of training man to fulfill his
aim by exercising all the faculties to the fullest extent as
a member of society. Aristotle
Education means the bringing out of the ideas of
universal validity which are latent in the mind of every
man. Socrates
Education is a conscious and deliberate effort to create
an atmosphere of learning and the learning process so
that learners are actively developing the potential for
him to have the spiritual strength of religious, self-
control, personality, intelligence, noble character, and
the skills needed themselves and society. Wikipedia
7. The chief task of education is,
above all, to shape man, or to
guide the evolving dynamism
through which man forms
himself as a man.
9. Traditional concept of Teaching
Teaching is the act of imparting instructions to the
learners in the classroom situation.
It is traditional class-room teaching.
In traditional class-room teaching the teacher gives
information to students, or one of the students, or one
of the students reads from a text-book, while the other
students silently follow him in their not merely
imparting knowledge or information to students.
While imparting knowledge teacher should kept in
mind the child as well as the orderly presentation of
subject-matter.
10. Modern concept of Teaching
Teaching is to cause the pupil to learn and acquire the
desired knowledge, skills and also desirable ways of
living in the society.
It is a process in which learner, teacher, curriculum
and other variables are organized in a systematic and
psychological way to attain some pre-determined
goals.
11. Some Expert Views about
Concept of Teaching
Ryburn’s view :
“Teaching is a relationship which keeps the child to
develop all his powers.”
Burton’s view :
“Teaching is the stimulation guidance, direction and
encouragement of learning.”
Smith’s view :
“Teaching is a system of actions intended to produce
learning.”
12. Pedagogy
Pedagogy , most commonly understood as the approach
to teaching, refers to the theory and practice of learning,
and how this process influences, and is influenced by, the
social, political and psychological development of
learners.
Pedagogy, taken as an academic discipline, is the study of
how knowledge and skills are imparted in an educational
context, and it considers the interactions that take place
during learning.
Both the theory and practice of pedagogy vary greatly, as
they reflect different social, political, and cultural
contexts.
13. Pedagogy is often described as the act of teaching.
The pedagogy adopted by teachers shapes their actions,
judgments, and other teaching strategies by taking into
consideration theories of learning, understandings of
students and their needs, and the backgrounds and
interests of individual students.
Its aims may range from furthering liberal education (the
general development of human potential) to the narrower
specifics of vocational education (the imparting and
acquisition of specific skills).
Conventional western pedagogies view the teacher as
knowledge holder and student as the recipient of
knowledge, but theories of pedagogy increasingly identify
the student as an agent and the teacher as a facilitator.
14. Pedagogy : Etymology
The word “Pedagogy”is a derivative of the Greek
word (paidagōgia)
“Paid” = Child
“Agogus” = Leading
“Pedagogy” literally means “ Leading Child”
Pedagogy is the Art , Craft & Science of Teaching.
The Art of Teaching :The responsive , creative part
The Craft of Teaching : Skills & Practices

across the globe.
Hybrid teaching includes e learning in addition to the face
to face teaching.
