 The Audio-Lingual Method is a method of
foreign language teaching which emphasizes
the teaching of listening and speaking before
reading and writing.
 Like the Direct Method, it is based on oral-
based approach. The Audio-lingual drills
students the use of grammatical sentence
patterns.
 Unlike the direct method, it has strong
theoretical based in linguistic and
 No native language in classroom.
 Students learn by actions, picture or media
are used to give meanings otherwise
emphasizes spoken language.
 Charles Fries (1945) of the University of
Michigan led the way in applying principles
from structural linguistics in developing the
method.

 Able to use target language.
 Teacher try to create the environment that
student learn to use language automatically
without stopping think .
 As a leader he/she directing and controlling
the language behaviour of students.
 Teacher try to communicate with all student
that he/she realise students abilities and
difficulties because some student are fast
learner and some are slow learner.
 The students are communicate with teacher.
 Students learn the rules and following
teacher’s direction.
 If students not understand teacher’s method
of teaching that students suggest to change
method of teaching.
 Students textbook is often not used
 Use audio visual equipment
 Language laboratory
 The aims at developing learning and
speaking skills without using grammar
translation method.
 Teachers are easy to teach in big class by
using drilling, the teacher can control
participation of each participate.
 Students lacked active role in classroom.
 The use of memorizing and drilling only
create the students habits not their
competences.
