The biotechnology wave is similar to the information technology
wave of the 1980s and 1990s
- Dietmar Hopp
The first use of Biotechnology was done in
year 500BC. Since then humans have been
using this technology unknowingly in many
things, specifically in farming and
pharmaceuticals. Biotechnology is not a new
field, although its intentional use is
comparatively new. Agriculture is the oldest
use of biotechnology. For example the
seedless watermelon is a gift of agricultural
biotechnology. It has devised approaches to
improve cultivation of plants.

Each cell in your body contains
about two meters of DNA. If laid
end-to-end it would measure 200
billion kilometers. That’s long
enough to stretch from Earth to
the sun 1,333 times. To put that in
perspective, it would take 7.4 days
for sunlight to travel the same
distance.

Viruses are not alive; they are
inanimate complex organic matter.
They lack any form of energy, carbon
metabolism, and cannot replicate or
evolve. Viruses are reproduced and
evolve only within cells.
The smallest known viruses are
circoviruses, which are 20
nanometers (0.00002 millimeters) in
diameter.

Agricultural biotechnology is the science by which you can
genetically modify plants to produce improved crop and
vegetable varieties.
It seems strange, but is true Biotechnology do come in four colors Blue,
Red, Green and White. Every color as always has its own meaning.
Blue is the color ocean – the study of water and bodies of water is
termed as Blue Biotechnology.
Red is the color of Blood and the Red Cross symbol – the study field in
biotechnology related to the medical is termed as Red Biotechnology
Green is the color of Plants – the study of agriculture in biotechnology
is termed as Green Technology.
White Biotechnology is study related to the industries, to develop cleaner
manufacturing processes.

It isn’t whether you win or lose – its whether you left any
traceable DNA.
DNA profiling is a forensic technique in
criminal investigations, comparing criminal
suspects' profiles to DNA evidence so as to
assess the likelihood of their involvement in
the crime with the smallest amount of genetic
material. It is also used in parentage testing, to
establish immigration eligibility, and in
genealogical and medical research. DNA
profiling has also been used in the study of
animal and plant populations in the fields of
zoology, botany, and agriculture.

Your genetics load the gun. Your lifestyle pulls the trigger.
- Mehmet Oz
We like to keep the air in our homes as clean as possible, and
sometimes we use HEPA air filters to keep offending
allergens and dust particles at bay.
But some hazardous compounds are too small to be trapped
in these filters. Small molecules like chloroform, which is
present in small amounts in chlorinated water, or benzene,
build up in our homes when we shower or boil water. Both
benzene and chloroform exposure have been linked to cancer.
Researchers at the University of Washington have genetically
modified a common houseplant pothos ivy (Epipremnum
aureum) to remove chloroform and benzene from the air
around it. The modified plants express a protein, called 2E1,
that transforms these compounds into molecules that the
plants can then use to support their own growth.

simply an extension and elaboration of (the) first molecule.
- Lewis Thomas
Several varieties of important agricultural
crops have been given genes from the soil
bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, which
produces a natural insecticide. The
breakthrough led to a 9% drop in worldwide
pesticide use from 1996 to 2011, while Bt
cotton and Bt corn saved farmers $57 billion
in pesticide costs.
Bt toxin is only poisonous to insects. Fish,
birds, humans, and other animals do not have
the receptor to which the protein binds.

Boolean Operators are used to
connect and define the
relationship between your search
terms. When searching electronic
databases, you can use Boolean
operators to either narrow or
broaden your record sets. The
three Boolean operators
are AND, OR and NOT.

The rewards for biotechnology are tremendous – to solve
disease, eliminate poverty, age gracefully. It sounds so much
cooler than FaceBook. - George M Church
Molecular imaging is the discipline which enables
visualization of cellular and molecular functions and
processes noninvasively in living systems. It enables the
visualisation of the cellular function and the follow-up of
the molecular process in living organisms without
perturbing them. The multiple and numerous
potentialities of this field are applicable to the diagnosis
of diseases such as cancer, and neurological and
cardiovascular diseases. This technique also contributes
to improving the treatment of these disorders by
optimizing the pre-clinical and clinical tests of new
medication. It can diagnose disease and assess therapeutic
response, long before changes can be seen with computed
tomography (CT) at the anatomical level.

DNA neither cares nor knows. DNA just is. And we dance to its
music.
- Richard Dawkins
The genetic information in every living
organism consists of combinations and
sequences of just four molecules —
adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine.
The different sequences of these 4
molecules gives us 24,000 genes found
in the human genome.

The potential for synthetic biology and biotechnology is vast; we
all have an opportunity to create the future together.
Out of 3500 species of mosquito only a few
hundreds can transmit diseases like dengue and
Zika. Among them Aedes aegypti is the most
dangerous in the world. Every year, her bite
spreads diseases and parasites that kill almost
one million people and cause debilitating
illnesses in hundreds of millions more. For this
genetically engineered insects have been
created to destroy the insect pests by inserting
two additional genes i.e. self-limiting gene
(prevents insects’ offspring from surviving to
adulthood) and fluorescent marker gene
(produces a protein which glows when a special
light is projected on it).

It seems strange, but is true Biotechnology do come in four colors Blue, Red, Green and White. Every color as always has its own meaning. Blue is the color ocean – the study of water and bodies of water is termed as Blue Biotechnology. Red is the color of Blood and the Red Cross symbol – the study field in biotechnology related to the medical is termed as Red Biotechnology Green is the color of Plants – the study of agriculture in biotechnology is termed as Green Technology. White Biotechnology is study related to the industries, to develop cleaner manufacturing processes.

DNA profiling is a forensic technique in criminal investigations, comparing criminal suspects' profiles to DNA evidence so as to assess the likelihood of their involvement in the crime with the smallest amount of genetic material. It is also used in parentage testing, to establish immigration eligibility, and in genealogical and medical research. DNA profiling has also been used in the study of animal and plant populations in the fields of zoology, botany, and agriculture.

Your lifestyle pulls the trigger. - Mehmet Oz We like to keep the air in our homes as clean as possible, and sometimes we use HEPA air filters to keep offending allergens and dust particles at bay. But some hazardous compounds are too small to be trapped in these filters. Small molecules like chloroform, which is present in small amounts in chlorinated water, or benzene, build up in our homes when we shower or boil water. Both benzene and chloroform exposure have been linked to cancer. Researchers at the University of Washington have genetically modified a common houseplant pothos ivy (Epipremnum aureum) to remove chloroform and benzene from the air around it. The modified plants express a protein, called 2E1, that transforms these compounds into molecules that the plants can then use to support their own growth.

The breakthrough led to a 9% drop in worldwide pesticide use from 1996 to 2011, while Bt cotton and Bt corn saved farmers $57 billion in pesticide costs. Bt toxin is only poisonous to insects. Fish, birds, humans, and other animals do not have the receptor to which the protein binds.

It enables the visualisation of the cellular function and the follow-up of the molecular process in living organisms without perturbing them. The multiple and numerous potentialities of this field are applicable to the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer, and neurological and cardiovascular diseases. This technique also contributes to improving the treatment of these disorders by optimizing the pre-clinical and clinical tests of new medication. It can diagnose disease and assess therapeutic response, long before changes can be seen with computed tomography (CT) at the anatomical level.

Dept. of Molecular Biology & Agricultural Biotechnology College of Agriculture, Raichur. The potential for synthetic biology and biotechnology is vast; we all have an opportunity to create the future together. Out of 3500 species of mosquito only a few hundreds can transmit diseases like dengue and Zika. Among them Aedes aegypti is the most dangerous in the world. Every year, her bite spreads diseases and parasites that kill almost one million people and cause debilitating illnesses in hundreds of millions more. For this genetically engineered insects have been created to destroy the insect pests by inserting two additional genes i.e. self-limiting gene (prevents insects’ offspring from surviving to adulthood) and fluorescent marker gene (produces a protein which glows when a special light is projected on it).
