SAC 102 – IRRIGATION WATER
QUALITY ASSESSMENT ( 0
+ 1 )
Biological Pollution…
Definition of Pollution…
When the harmful substances contaminate the
environment it is called pollution.
Pollution refers to very bad condition of
environment in terms of quantity and quality.
What are Pollutants ?
• Any harmful substance/
organism coming from living
organisms or by itself, effecting
the lives of organisms living in a
particular environment.
What is Biological Pollution ?
An impact or change in aquatic or
terrestrial environment by Human
activity.
Introduction of non-indigenous and
invasive species in environment.
Some of the Biological
Pollutants are,
 Bacteria
 Viruses
 Insects
 Pollen from plants

Biological Pollutants…
Consists of pathogens (disease-
causing agents)
Come from sewage.
 Diseases include: Typhoid, cholera,
dysentery, polio, infectious hepatitis,
salmonella, E-Coli bacteria.
Health effects by Bio Pollutants…
Asthma.
Lethargy Allergic reaction by repeated
exposure to an allergen.
 Fever, associated with exposure toxins
from microorganisms.
 Legionella and influenza are known to be
transmitted by air.
Sources of Bio Pollution…
Viruses are usually transmitted from infected
people or animals.
Bacteria are transmitted by debris,
contamination, mosquito etc.,
Contaminated central air handling systems
can be breeding grounds for mold If an
invasive specie introduced or enter by chance
in an environment.
Droppings and body parts from
Cockroaches,rodents.
What is biological pollution control ?
Biological processes are regarded as
promising and sustainable. The bio-parts
of pollutants are degraded through
microbial activities, where complex
organic matters are degraded and
nutrients such as nitrogen and
phosphorus are removed. Archaea and
bacteria are important in such processes.
How to reduce Bio Pollution ?
Avoid having allergy-causing animals in
homes.
 Clean portable humidifiers every third
day. Minimum introduction to invasive
species.
 Don't get contaminated yourself.
 Vaccination.
How is biological pollution prevented ?
Use dehumidifiers and air conditioners,
especially in hot, humid climates, to reduce
moisture in the air, but be sure that the
appliances themselves don't become
sources of biological pollutants. Raise the
temperature of cold surfaces where
moisture condenses. Use insulation or
storm windows.
BINPAS…
 Free online tool for calculating bio
pollution level.
 It translate the existing data on
miscellaneous invasive alien species
impacts into uniform bio pollution
measurement units.
Thank You...
