“INNOFINITY” Design Conclave organized in School of Design Studies at UPES
School of Design Studies (SoDS) in UPES is the only of its kind in northern India which now offers five courses at both
undergraduate level and post graduate level in the sectors of Industrial Design, Product Design, Transportation Design and
Digital Arts .Well known Industry houses have already begun to visit UPES for campus recruitments and selection of interns
including General Motors, Honda motorcycles, Mauti Udyog, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland , Elephant Design,
Fortune Cookies and many others.
SoDS organized a “Design Conclave” for the very first time in its campus at Bidholi. This conclave had two distinct components
called ‘Design Dialogue’ and ‘Design Opera’. The ‘Design Dialogue’ saw three eminent personalities from the field of Design
visiting UPES campus and speaking to the students of School of Design Studies, these included Mr. G. Sathiyaseelan, Design
Head of Ashok Leyland, Mr. Satish Gokhale, Founding Director of Design Directions and Ms. Richa Ghansiyal a social
entrepreneur and owner of Design & Development. It also included an interactive session with the well-known software
company called “Autodesk”.
While the ‘Design Opera’ component was an exhibition to showcase the variety of products designed by the students while
also displaying the various design processes which these students learn in their respective courses. Some of the main
attractions of the exhibition included the clay model exhibits of various vehicles by the students of Transportation Design,
these models were made from imported industrial clay and were made by the exact process which is followed at General
Motors. The students of Industrial & Product Design had displayed their innovative products which included unique featured
Chess Boards and Theme based wall clocks, unique outdoor furniture for unutilized and ignored spaces on UPES campus
which incorporates the existing trees etc. These students had also on display furniture conceptualized and designed on
linguistic alphabets from the languages of Hindi, English, Gujarati, Malayalam, Burmese and Greek. The students had also put
on display some products made from waste materials like Tyres, Gunny Bags, Plastic waste etc.
Mr Arun Dhand, Director – Media Affairs also shared that work done by some students of SoDS during their recent industry
internship has been validated and accepted by those industries and would soon get incorporated for manufacturing and will
hit the floor shop. Suraj Londhe , Supratik Sarkar and Niharika Pandey pursuing their masters in Industrial Design did their
internship with a medical equipment manufacturing company called “SKANRAY” in Mysore. The designed developed by these
students during their internship would shortly get incorporated in manufacturing Mechanical Ventilators, Mobile X-Ray
Machine and Patient Monitor respectively. The office furniture concept of Ms Pooja Maisheri also pursuing her masters in
Industrial design has also been accepted by “Space Wood”, manufacturing office furniture in Nagpur. Her design includes
using approximately 18 unique components to make 21 variants of office furniture.
Similarly, team comprising Rahul Anand, Yogesh Kumar Singh & Sumit Srivastava pursuing their M.Des in Transportation
design have been able to add value to “Bharat Earth Movers Ltd”, Mysore during their internship. Their design of modification
of Drivers cabin of heavy duty ’Dump Trucks’ has been accepted by the company at the conceptual level and work on the
engineering design is in progress. Arpit Mayer pursuing his M.Des in Transportation Design has also been able to add value to
“DESMANIA”, the company which he interned with since his design of Modifying the exteriors & interiors of ‘Delhi Metro
Feeder’ Bus service has also been accepted. “AMPERE ELECTRIC VEHICLES”, Coimbatore have in principle accepted the
modifications to the ’Personal Mobility Vehicle’ being manufactured by them. The modifications were conceptualized and
designed by a team comprising of Arjun Kurunji & Zishan Alam both pursuing their M.Des in transportation design in UPES
The faculty team at SoDS ably led by Dr Soumyajit Ghosal, Director at SoDS includes Mr Jagpreet Singh, Assistant Professor;
Mr Harish C B, Assistant Professor; Mr Rakesh Sah, Design Fellow; Mr Manas Mishra, Program Head of M. Des; Mr Piyush
Goghari, Program Head of B. Des& BFA and supported by design team which includes Mr S V Savarkar, Mr Mukund Jetva, Mr
Jyanti Prasad and Ms Amanpreet Kaur.
