1. Conceptual Sketching
Speaker: Mr. Sumer Singh, Assistant Professor, IIT Delhi
Date :- 22nd
& 23rd
March, 2014
Basics of sketching were taught and practiced in this workshop. The students were told the
difference between perspective and realistic sketches and were made to practice the basic methods
to make these sketches. Starting from the art of making straight lines, perfect circles and ellipses,
students were made aware of the steps and techniques required to make a good sketch. Students
were made to practice these basic elements of a good sketch over a time period of several hours
and their practice sheets were assessed by the faculty. Gradually the students were made to practice
sketching of simple objects such as chair, mug, and matchbox etc. several times and a continuous
assessment was made throughout this session. At the end of the session, the students were asked
to sketch a totally new object or component of real life which they thought needs improvement.
The students were guided by the faculty throughout this process and the sketches were evaluated.
2. Computer-aided Sculpturing using Alias: Applications in Automotive Design
Speaker: Mr. Ashish Jayaswal, Manager (Sculpturing Design), MSIL, Gurgaon
Date :- 13th
& 14th
April, 2014
This workshop on digital sculpturing evolves a design from 2D to 3D. Mr. Ashish Jayaswal,
Manager (Sculpturing Design), MSIL, Gurgaon explained the steps of design process. He
explained the facilities required for a car design studios. Digital sculpturing is a basic skill required
by all designers. An exposure to Digital Sculpturing (CAS) and its implementation using Alias
Autodesk was provided to the participants. During the workshop, Mr. Jayaswal emphasized why
skill in Views, Proportion, Volume and overall composition shaping as per requirement,
Engineering validation – Die Pull, Draft Angle, Minimum Radius, Regulations etc. are important
for designers. With Alias software one can combine procedural modeling, direct modeling, and
trimmed surfaces to develop digital models. Alias has versatility to support a broad range of
modeling applications. It can be used to develop conceptual sketch models and production models
through aesthetic technical surfacing. Mr. Jayaswal made the particiapants aware of the use of
Alias software at MSIL for designing the outer body of different automobiles.
3. Exposure to product form
Speaker: Mr. Sumer Singh, Assistant Professor, IIT Delhi
Date :- 3rd
& 4th
May, 2014
In this workshop, students were exposed to Product Form through exercises in clay modelling and
plaster of Paris.
Students were asked to develop clay models of objects having attributes similar to those
possessed by various pictures.
Plaster of Paris poured in various containers including card board boxes, balloons and hand
palm and different exercises on form were carried out.
4. WORSHOP ON PROTOTYPING

A two week workshop on Prototyping was organized by Centre of Excellence in Industrial and Product
Design (CoE I&PD) at PEC University of Technology. Research scholars and students of ME Industrial
Design) attended the workshop. This workshop was organised with the aim of using creativity of students
to conceptualize new products and use the skills acquired by them during the ME course to develop a
prototype for the same. Experts from IIT Delhi and Maruti Udyog provided guidance to the students. The
steps involved towards this end were as follows:-
Conceptualization of a product and definition of key words associated with it, Sketching of the
product, Development of product model from clay/ MDF board/other material.
Image boards of some of the products conceptualized by the participants can be seen through the
