1) UPES inaugurated a state-of-the-art Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system in their Central Library, making them the first library in Dehradun to install such a system. 2) The RFID system involves equipping each book and journal with a chip, installing self-service kiosks for book issuing and returning, and electronic security gates. 3) A mobile RFID scanner allows staff to quickly detect books placed in the wrong location by scanning shelves. The system provides the exact location of books.

STATE OF THE ART RFID INSTALLED IN UPES LIBRARY
University becomes the first RFID enabled Library in Dehradun
Dehradun, 19 July 2017:
The chief guest Mr. Sharad Mehra, CEO, Laureate India, inaugurated a high end Radio Frequency
Identification System (RFID) in the Central Library of UPES at Bidholi in presence of senior officials of
UPES which included Mr Utpal Ghosh, President ; Dr. S J Chopra, Chancellor; Mr. Abhay Sharma,
Registrar; Mr. Sanjiv Zutshi, Senior Director, Mr. Arun Dhand, Director – Media Affairs; Ms. Deepa
Verma- Director – Institutional Affairs; Brig S S Dhillon, Director-Administration; Dr R S Thakur, Chief
Librarian and the entire staff of the library. UPES becomes the first Library to install the RFID system.
Sharing details of the RFID system Mr. Dhand shared that each and every book and journal in the library
is now equipped with the chip, self -service kiosk has been installed near the library gate for getting the
books issued and also for returning the books. Electronic security gate will ensure that no book is taken
outside without being electronically issued and registered in the system. A software of all the Library
floors has also been made by which the system would be able to inform the user the exact location of
the book at the click of the button. A RFID handle mobile reader has also been incorporated in the highly
automated system by which an erroneously placed book can also be detected in no time, by just
scanning the mobile reader past the bookshelves. It will start beeping the moment it is able to read the
chip on the book.
Speaking on this occasion Mr. R S Thakur informed that UPES has two other libraries apart from the
Central Library, which is primarily a Library for the College of Engineering Studies. The other two are
located in the Kandoli campus, one being for the College of Management & Economic Studies and the
other for College of Legal Studies. The inventory across all the three libraries includes 1, 46, 000 books;
153 Journals; 1230 E-Books and 17,000 E-Data Bases & E-Journals said Thakur.
Mr. Mehra was taken around the entire Library by the Library staff and shown all aspects of the library
with live demonstrations. He was highly appreciative about the efforts undertaken by the University and
congratulated the entire team of UPES management and staff for their foresight and prudence.
