Miley Cyrus's image has drastically changed over time from a sweet country girl on the Disney channel to a more edgy persona. She stated she felt sexualized in her previous image and wanted more freedom in her self-expression. While some changes in artists are expected as they mature, Miley's transformation was notable. Her commercials now aim to portray her authentic self to maintain trust with fans as her image continues to evolve in non-traditional ways for a former child star.
2. How is artist's image currently promoted? why?
Miley Cyrus’s image has drastically changed from back in the
day. From a very sweet country girl, to a very edgy and different
girl. She stated that she started to feel sexualized and therefore
wanted to change her image.
She stated “It became something that was expected of me. I
didn’t want to show up to photo shoots and be the girl who
would get my t*** out and stick out my tongue. In the
beginning, it was kind of like saying, ‘F*** you. Girls should be
able to have this freedom or whatever.’ But it got to a point
where I did feel sexualized.”
3. How and why has the artist's image changed over
time? Compare different music video in your
presentation
Miley continues to say that people just change. “I just want people to
see that this is who I am right now. I’m not saying I’ve never been
myself,” she said. “Who I was on the last record was really who I am. It’s
just 'myself' has been a lot of different people because I change a lot.”
She expressed her emotions on the track “Younger now” where she
states how “no one stays the same” “change is a thing you can count
on” and even how she isn’t “afraid of who she used to be”.
Although, Miley was very different back in the day. She used to star as
Miley Stewart on the Disney channel TV show Hannah Montana, and
was seen as a very friendly teen idol, however this changed when Miley
stated to started that she felt sexualized.
4. What is the commercial imperative? (how is the artist
and their videos 'sellable' to their audience?)
Since Miley has changed her image so drastically, they also have to make sure to
promote her differently as well, this is because if they continue to advertise her
like how she was before, then her audience wouldn’t like that. Therefore they need
a new way of showing this new Miley Cyrus.
I believe the commercial imperative is to make sure that the audience knows how
authentic and genuine Miley is being with her fans. She knows that she is not the
girl who she used to be, but accepts the fact that she is now who she is, and she is
happy for that fact.
Miley must show her true side when advertising, so that they know that she is
being genuine and real, this creates trust between fans and the artist.
5. Do you think the artist's image was invented or ready
made?
I believe that this type of style has been done before, but I think that this style is
unique to Miley herself. The change itself has been mentioned to be similar to
what Justin Bieber went through. At first he was a sweet boy but then he suddenly
grew up and became very different to how he was. This is very similar to what
happened to Miley, and I can see why people would make that comparison.
