The network is down and you’ll likely have to take it apart, only to find out that the source of the problem is a cabling issue. Since 40% of downtime is caused by issues such as bad connectors, broken cables, and excessive cable length, this new tester is a simple way to quickly identify the source of network downtime and quickly get your systems up and running.

• A VLAN (virtual LAN) is a subnetwork which can group together collections of
devices on separate physical local area networks (LANs).
• This is a technique to segment traffic on the network
• Typically, devices that generate similar traffic will be grouped into a single VLAN
• Wireless access points traffic (IT Network)
• Production network traffic (OT Network)
• Security camera traffic
• You cannot tell from the outside of the switch which ports belong to which VLAN
• Making sure a device is connected to the correct VLAN will improve
performance, finding it is in the wrong VLAN may explain poor performance

Editor's Notes
Issues with the cabling and network can take many forms. From our research, cabling issues such as bad connectors, broken cables, and excessive cable length contribute to 40% of downtime. Issues with EMI and Software/Devices also contribute to network downtime. The LinkIQ helps diagnose these issues, but how does it do it?
The first pain point LinkIQ address is “does the cable and network support my requirements?” The LinkIQ provides a simple autotest that gives you al the info on the cable you need to diagnose a cabling issue. It also runs a frequency based measurement and presents the result on the LInkIQ’s Bandwidth Speedometer. More on that in a second.
The cable is the problem 50% of the time, it gets blamed 99% of the time. Finding out it is not a cable issue is also very helpful.
If you are plugged into a switch, the LinkIQ gives you the key switch info and negotiates with the switch to tell you the speeds the port is configured to.
So why is the bandwidth speedometer important? If we take a look at the cabling standards, they broadly define cable link performance by Categories (Cat5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, up to Cat 8).
The ethernet standards define a device’s performance on the network based on connection speed. For instance, let’s look at Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T). That Gigabit of speed doesn’t take up all of the bandwidth on Cat5e Cabling, but higher speeds, like 10 gig, would exceed this bandwidth. This is why it is important that your customer validates that their cabling can handle the connection speed they are looking for.
It is important to note however, that a bandwidth Test from LinkIQ, does not replace the need for a certified report. AS the slide says, Just because LinkIQ says a cabled link will support 10Gig ethernet, does not mean the cable is a certified Cat 6A link.
Also following along these principles, all Cat6A cabling can support 10gig, but not all cables that support 10 gig are Cat 6A cables, So a bandwidth test is needed
Moving on to Pain point #2 where does the cable plug in on the other end?
The LinkIQ has a built in toner, and the ability to blink the connected port. But the real power lies in the Switch info, Port number, and VLAN info

VLAN Identification is very useful to customers
[Click]
Here we see we are connected to port 8 and it is on VLAN 1
[Click]
A VLAN is used to ‘segment’ traffic on the network.
Your production network is very time sensitive, and you don’t want it filled with traffic from mobile users on the Wireless Network
You don’t want anyone to see the traffic from your security cameras so keep it away from regular users
[Click]
From the outside of the switch, you can’t tell which ports belong to which VLAN
[Click]
If we need one more port for a new Wireless Access Point, where do we connect it? The VLANs can be changed dynamically, did you add it to port 9 or Port 10?
Pain point #4 pertains to the growth in Devices being powered over ethernet. Like the MIcroscanner PoE, the LinkIQ does a negotiation with the switch to find out what the switch is offering. And then it does a LOAD test to tell you how much power is actually getting to you! We know PoE is growing, LinkIQ is the tool to help support that growth.
Type 1 & 2 Supplies are usually 44/50V
Type 3 supplies are usually 50V
Type 4 supplies are up to 52V to deliver the power required.
Regulations in many jurisdiction’s limit the current that can be supplied, 500mA is considered the upper limit ISO Standards identify Category RP3 links of up to 500mA.
The Fifth Pain Point is the need to quickly document work and access a platform to quickly retrieve that documentation. A customer told us he needed to install a few drops in remote locations in Texas. The end customer didn’t require certification for their application, but they still needed a report showing the cable was installed correctly. LinkIQ aims to makes this process even easier.
One of the best features of the CableIQ was it’s reporting. The bad thing was the CableIQ Reporter. We have now integrated reporting form LinkIQ directly into LinkWare PC which is already widely used by our customers and is simple enough that new customers can easily use it.
Let’s take a quick glance at how LinkIQ stacks up against current Fluke Networks copper testers.
Only the DSX series certifies the cabling
The MS-POE is a great entry point into PoE testing, but if you really want to get the best info on your PoE install, the LinkIQ is the clear choice
All testers provide basic cable tests, but the LinkIQ is the only tester that provides a network speed test and the switch configuration info.
The LinkIQ is your opportunity to sell up from the MS-POE and the CableIQ and it is priced with that in mind.
Here are the 2 kits for standard IT networks. We have the base kit which comes with the LinkIQ, a remote ID and assorted cables. And we have the LiQ-KIT which is where the real value lies for the end customer. The LIQ-KIT comes with more remote IDs for more efficient testing, especially in a multi-drop testing environment. The included Intellitone probe practically pays for itself in the first few uses by cutting down on time trying to identify which cable you are testing in a bundle.
Now here are the kits for the industrial technician. The industrial ethernet adapter and included industrial patch cords allow the technician to test RJ45, M8, M12D, and M12X terminated cabling.
The LIQ-KIT-IE prepares the tech to be ready to troubleshoot and install both IT and OT networks, which is important if they have a mixed network like I explained in the VLAN example earlier.
Here is a look at the IE Adapter and the corresponding cable ends you may see in industrial ethernet deployments.
We have multiple accessories available as well, from extra remote IDs, to an add on kit to the base IT kits to allow testing on the OT. We also have GOLD support for the LinkIQ that covers repairs/replacement of the LinkIQ. Gold also applies to the industrial ethernet remote if the customer purchases the IE Gold plan.
Other accessories include the Pro3000 Filter probe, the Intellitone (if they don’t purchase the kit), and the IS60 tool kit so can not only diagnose the issue with LinkIQ, but they can make any fixes they need.
