Lionsgate and Davis Films produced the film "Blitz" starring Tim Loe and John Wallace. Lionsgate is the larger production company based in California that has produced similar action films. The documentary analyzes scenes from the opening credits of "Blitz" including shots of a man sleeping on his couch after a rough night and later confronting three men attempting to steal a car, establishing him as the protagonist. Newspaper headlines are then shown labeling the protagonist a "Hurley maniac" for his actions, implying the media will blow future scenarios out of proportion.
2. Here the institutions are
shown at the
start, “Lionsgate” is the
bigger company (but not a
conglomerate), and
originated in
Vancouver, Canada, but
based in California. “Davis
Films” are a much smaller
filming company.
Lionsgate have been
involved in many similar
films, such as; Crank, The
Bank Job and The
Expendables.
3. • The opening shot is a birds eye
view (long shot) of a man lying
on his couch, establishing
location. This shows him to be
an average man as he is not in
a bed, also, as he is fully
dressed, it connotes he may
have had a rough night and is
attempting to catch up on his
sleep.
• The next shot is a medium-long
shot which displays more of
the living room, and the man
now sitting up, looking rather
tired, gaining more credibility
to the connotation of “a rough
night’s sleep”.
4. The XLS of the street, taken
from an over the shoulder
shot (OSS), shows three men
towards the top right of the
street shot, approaching a car,
the OSS connotes that we are
on the man in the apartments
side, and the men in the
street are against us. The low
amount of lighting in this
circumstance represents the
mystery of the men.
The amount of sound shows that the men are
approaching the car with no expertise they are easily
spotted. The loudness of their voices also connotes
that they are arrogant, and expect the presumed car
theft, to be a walk in the park.
5. This next shot shows all four men in the one shot, the now obvious main protagonist
approaching, and the 3 car thieves. This accompanied with the pitch of orchestral music
heightening, builds anticipation for something intense to happen, most likely a fight.
The dark lighting connotes mystery and darkness. I found some irony in the midst here, the
thieves do not want to be seen, but are shrouded in light, whereas the man we are
following, has more of a shadow over him, and he isn’t bothered whether he is seen or not.
6. We see a long shot of the now labelled “hero” walking away with his
back turned to the first group of “villains”. The film has now begun to
identify the archetypes. He is the hero because he has protected the
persons car by fighting these men, and defeating them.
In the background we see a London style “red double decker bus”, now
confirming the location of England, more specifically, London.
7. The newly branded hero is now being accused of being a “Hurley maniac”. The screenshot
of a newspaper headline enforces the viewer to see the previous scene as a small matter of
protecting a fellow persons belongings, being blown out of proportion by the media. The
fact that there are three featured articles in the opening credits, implies that the films plot
may contain many of these scenarios.
