2. Horror is a film genre seeking to get a negative emotional
reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's fears. It is
somewhat unique among the film genres in that there is a
recognizable pattern that happens again and again. A film will
come along and terrify an audience capturing their imaginations.
INTRODUCTION
3. By the end of the 1980s horror had become so
reliant on gross-out gore that it seemed to have
lost its power to do anything more than shock
and then amuse. In the first half of the 1990s,
the genre continued many of the themes from
the 1980s. New Nightmare, with In the Mouth of
Madness (1995), The Dark Half (1993), and
Candyman (1992), were part of a mini-movement
of self-reflexive or metafictional horror films.
Each film touched upon the relationship
between fictional horror and real-world horror.
1900’S
4. Due to the event of 9/11 the start of
the 2000s saw a quiet period for the
horror genre. Some of the films that
were released include, The Exorcist,
Jeepers Creepers and Final
Destination. It wasn’t until 2005 that
the genre was more popular than
ever.
2000’S 2005
5. Remakes of earlier horror movies
became routine around this time.
Some of the films released in this
time period were Halloween (2007)
Prom Night (2008) My Bloody Valentine
(2009) and
Halloween II (2009).
2005 - 2010
6. Remakes remain popular and serialized.
Horror has become prominent on
television with The Walking Dead, American
Horror Story, and The Strain, also many
popular horror films have had successful
television series made. You’re Next (2011),
and The Cabin in the Woods (2012) led to a
return to the slasher genre. The Purge
(2013) and its sequel The Purge Anarchy
(2014) both became commercial
successes with their unique concepts of
society being the killer.
2010 – PRESENT
7. I think that our film trailer links in with horror films from the
past due to the films in the 1990’s being said to be based around
real world horror, this is in relation to our plot idea because
murderers are real unlike the supernatural element we see in
horror film today. However I also think that our trailer fits in with
present day horror films because the overall plot about two girls
having a party is common in the genre. Prom Night (2008) and
You’re Next (2011) are two fairly recent films which I think are
similar to our trailer in elements such as the title the plot and the
mise-en scene.
