The Marine & Safety Superintendent is responsible for handling all marine activities related to ships in a safe and environmentally conscious manner. They assist the Marine & Safety Manager and ensure guidelines and best practices are followed. Key duties include analyzing reports, conducting inspections and audits, investigating incidents, monitoring regulatory changes, and liaising with stakeholders to ensure ships and crews comply with requirements. The Marine & Safety Superintendent must have a Second Class Master's Certificate or equivalent qualifications and experience in a similar role handling tankers or gas carriers.

Scope ofduties / Responsibilities
Handling of all Marine activities related to the ships under his responsibility in a safe and
environmentally aware manner,consistent with industry standards (MARPOL,SOLAS,ISGOTT,
OCIMF etc.).
Assisting the Marine & Safety Manager on matters related to Marine and Safety issues on vessels.
Ensuring IMCA guidelines and ‘best industry practices’ are adhered to at all times, with regard to
vessel operations, equipment and personnel requirements.
Analyzing reports such as Safety,SIRE /CDI inspection, PSC Inspections, Internal audits, Near
misses, Incidents/Accidents. Where required, advice vessels on matters related to Marine activities.
Reviewing and responding to safety and other reports received from the vessel.
Conducting vessels marine inspection and ensuring compliance with class / statutory requirement &
sea worthiness.
Conducting internal ISM, ISPS and MLC audits on ships. Identify areas for improvement and verify
implementation of the corrective and preventive action.
Conducting safety, environmental and security drills on board to assess effectiveness.
Conducting investigation of incidents/accidents on board when appointed to do so by the Marine &
Safety Manager.
Carrying out management inspections and identifying issues that may impact quality assurance.
Ensuring that the Fleet equipment are in a fully operational state of readiness at all times.
Monitoring the evolving changes to the SOLAS, MARPOL,STCW, MLC, ISPS, Class, Flag State,
Oil Major and other applicable requirements related with Marine issues and plan the implementation
of the same on vessels.
Interviewing deck officers to evaluate suitability for selection/promotion.
Preparing and conducting trainings for officers and crew.
Conducting appraisals of Officers and recommend actions.
Liaising with interested parties such as Class, Oil Majors, Ship Owners,Suppliers and other stake-
holders.
Monitoring vessels performance through vessels daily noon reports.
Monitoring vessels cargoes,in order to ensure that only cargoes which the vesselis certified to carry
are carried.
Monitoring tank cleaning and hold cleaning and providing, when necessary,instructions to the Master
in consultation with the Ship operator & Technical Superintendents.
Ensuring that vessels carry the required charts,publications, operational manuals, and other
documentation required by Flag State and other regulatory bodies, and that these are corrected and/or
updated as required.
Ensuring that the fleets DP equipment is in a fully operational state of readiness at all times.
Arranging filing of correspondence/communication concerning the Marine & safety aspects of ships
under his care.
2. Actively contributing to the development, implementation and maintenance of the SMS.
Approve invoices and Port Agents’ disbursements accounts for Marine items.
Handling the Marine claims of the ships under his responsibility and keep records as per the Claims
Handling Procedure.
Performing any other duties as required by the Marine & Safety Manager.

Required qualifications/competencies
Second Class Master’s Certificate and/or other appropriate academic and professional qualifications
of equivalent calibre.
Previous work experience ashore in a similar role handling Tankers and/or Chemical Tankers or LPG
/ LNG vessels is desirable.
An in-depth knowledge of the rules and regulations governing vessels’ management.
Ability to improve/develop and implement safe,dependable and cost effective vessel management
processes.
