Educational Focus:
Examination skills for the Design
Paper of DSE Visual Arts
Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee
Many people might have this perception: “Fine Arts requires certain capabilities in doing
researches because of studying art histories, such as focusing on Chinese art histories once being
admitted to CUHK Fine Arts. But, Design doesn’t require any research capabilities as such writing
tasks are irrelevant to the software tasks within the industrial field.” To a very large extent, this
perception is quite correct. But, for some very exceptional case, some BA Design graduates from
Poly U Design might be acknowledged by their Design professors: “I can see that your
performance in Art Histories, Art Theories, Aesthetic Studies, Design Histories and Design
Theories subjects are quite distinguished. Can you choose not to apply for designer jobs outside
the campus after graduation? Stay behind in our university, and get promoted to be a
postgraduate for doing design researches and serving as a tutor then!” This slight portion of
lucky undergraduates might consider a unique path of stable careerdevelopment instead of
ambitious entrepreneurship, but our scholastic mechanism also badly needs certain experts like
this.
Indeed, there is a programme from Poly U Design called “MDen” (Master of Design). It is taught
by renowned foreign professors. If you have such chance of studying this taught-based MDen,
2
your previous skills in Art Appreciation during your DSE VA Design exam would then be
applicable!
I did have a 90s-born friend called Dixon Ngai Tak-lung who is an expert in porcelain painting,
and he graduated from Poly U Design in “Interior Design” stream. Baby Tak Lung told me that, he
was required to study a compulsory course called “Concepts of Contemporary Chinese and
Western Art”. He decided to write about the Neo-Ink Painting of Lu Shoukun and Kan Tai-keung.
Thus he obtained a very good result. Of course, he also needed to study certain Design Histories
and Design Theories courses. There arefive concentrations from Poly U Design, namely “Visual
Communication”, “Interior Design”, “Advertising Design”, “Product Design & Innovations” and
“Fashion Design & Textile Studies”. No matter for which stream, it is definitely impossible that all
the courses a student takes within his three to four years of undergraduate studies are purely
about “software trainings”. There must be 30% courses being reserved for other kinds of
liberal-arts learning within the mechanism of Poly U Design’s curriculum planning. Some might
take drawing and 3D-making courses as free electives of “Applied Arts”, whereas all students
must take a sufficient amount of compulsory theory subjects. So, this arrangement provides an
alternative room for some persons who are good at fine arts and not too good at software but
do not know why he would get a Poly U Design offer to get a passing Cumulative GPA before the
Commencement, as this type of extraordinary persons can get a Second-Up or Second-Low
Honour through just obtaining Distinctions from “Applied Arts” and “Theories” subjects but
perform poor in “Software” subjects. So, do not underestimate the effectiveness of Art
Appreciation from DSE VA Design exam!
The Aptitude Test before the Second-Round Portfolio Interview of Poly U Design admission also
badly requires potential candidates with solid capabilities in “DSE VA Design Appreciation &
Criticism”. For the exam paper of Aptitude Test, there are questions like “logo design”, “event
management”, “design knowledge” and even “political studies & social sciences”. For the “event
management”, I did encounter a request which was to draw a storyboard-liked diagramfor
illustrating how I would plan for a wedding banquet, with an addition of writing certain
idea-descriptions. For the “political studies & social sciences” evaluation, there was a question
called “Which political party will you votefor during the upcoming LegCo Election? Explain
why.” My classmate answered in a legitimately pro-Beijing manner: “To me, I am not interested
in politics. But if you ask me to vote, I will definitely not vote for Democratic Party because it
only creates lots of chaos in our society”. Finally, my classmate was disqualified from entering
the Second-Round Portfolio Interview even though her works were usually acknowledged as very
trendy in design awareness. For me, even though I am currently a “non-anti-Extradition” and a
“light blue ribbon”, I pretended to be very critical to Tung Chee-hwa and Jiang Zemin’s
3
administration once encountering my “Aptitude Test” exam paper. I answered this political
question in this way: “I will definitely vote for Democratic Party and Civic Party. First, the June 4
Massacre must be vindicated. Second, the SARS outbreak was the fault of Beijing due to Jiang
Zemin’s refusal in condemning Huang Huahua’s connivance on Guangdong citizens’ spreading
of viruses to Hong Kong and resigning Huang Huahua. Third, it is dangerous for Hong Kong to
get the Article 23 implemented. Thus, we must rely on the pan-democratic legislators to
restrain the dictatorship of Communist China.” Finally, Poly U Design gave me a pass in this
Aptitude Test, and let me enter the Second-Round Portfolio Interview even though I was just
carrying my SBA oil paintings from Rosaryhill School to the Poly U lecture room. Here I deeply
thanked Poly U Design and Prof. Jin-Guang TENG for appreciating my creativetalents during this
JUPAS admission experience in 2006 despite of Prof. Jenny SO Fong-suk’s brutal neglect on my
eagerness in entering CUHK Fine Arts.
So, this experience from “Aptitude Test” in “Visual Communication” concentration proves that, if
you manage to write Design Appreciation essays pretty well during your DSE VA exam, your
intellectual mind will be greatly broadened that you can render diversified tricky liberal-arts
questions in the Poly U Design admission process.
Talking about the matter of the creativedesign task in DSE VA Design exam, it requires a solid
level of traditional craftsmanship in typographies, layout editorial and chrominance keying.
Those who are very good at digital-image pasting and can brainstorm lots of creativegimmicks
but with very weak skills of refining the hand-drawn graphics cannot get good marks in DSE VA
Design exam. Moreover, it will definitely be advantageous for those persons who often pay
attentions to the commercial advertisements inside the MTR train platforms. Most of the Design
questions from HKEAA areabout graphic design, in which it must be equivalent to advertising
design. This aforesaid type of persons paying attention to MTR advertisements has the talents in
imitating the compositions and human structures of the MTR advertisements even just using
markers and watercolours as drawing tools. At HKBU School of Communication, there is an
academic department called “Public Relations & Advertising” (PRA), and students from there
often do analyzes on the photographic effects of employed ambassador models, together with
the brainstorming of remarkable slogans/messages showing remarkable typographic effects.
Drawing logos are so easy, but drawing an MTR advertisement is difficult. If you can handle the
latter task, you will feel confident in obtaining Grade 5** from the DSE VA Design exam.
4
Here are some successful examples for the “narrative” realm of “Design” exam with
Distinction grades guaranteed, which are as creative as the effects of MTR
advertisements:
Title: Chateau de Bordeaux – a menu design for a French restaurant
Title of left piece: The Wetland Park Phase 2 – advertisement design for a park
Title of right piece: Be a Law-Abiding Citizen – poster design for an art competition

Title: Uniform designs for the waiters and waitresses from a pub – fashion design
Title: Creativity Tour Club 2008-2009 – a T-shirt logo design for a mini registered
student society called “Creativity Tour Club” at Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Title: Jesus Christ’s Footprints Accompanied by Blessed Grapes – an E-card
design which was a Championship awarded work in a design competition organized
by Chaplain’s Office of Hong Kong Baptist University

Demonstrationfor writing agood piece of aesthetic comparison:
Part A: Design appreciation and Criticism
1. (A) Compare, contrast and analyze the design concepts, layouts and visual effects
of the two advertising works below. (20 marks)
(a) “Concord Pacific Boat Festival” organized by DRAGONBOATBC.CA in Canada
 Designer: Steve Wong
(b) “NIKE AIR – The Elemental” organized by NIKE in the United States: a logo design
for a sponsorship scheme to Suzuki Lisa, a renowned Japanese athlete, to
participate in the Osaka Marathon 2019
 Designer: Jared Nickerson
How to write a piece of good essay......
Work (a) is a piece of poster design by DRAGONOATBC.CA with formal
digital illustrations, whereas Work (b) is a piece of logo design by a NIKE
15
designer called Jared Nickerson with a digitalized graffiti-liked free
composition. Both pieces consistently adopted light blue as background
for expressing an oceanic effect of optimism, as Steve Wong focused on
the description of waves and Jared Nickerson focused on the plain sea
with clouds and thunders from the logo as decorative elements. For
differences, Work (a) describes a collective watery sport called Dragon
Boat Festival, whereas Work (b) describes an individualistic marathon
pursuit with a prior emphasis on promoting training shoes for potential
runners.
From Work (a), you can see that the dragon boat is in brown yellow which
is the cored focal point, whereas the contesters are in different skin
colours showing a cross-racial harmony. From Work (b), a great portion
of the logo is in wooden brown, whereas a running shoe on the lower left
corner and the rainbow are found of purple. The composition of Work (a)
is quite formal, as Steve Wong had to care for the neat distribution of
competition information as priority so that the iconographies must be
placed in a formal pattern without much dynamic motions. The
composition of Work (b) is quite free-styled. Jared Nickerson never cares
about the layout-editorial norms as serious as Steve Wong from Work (a),
as he treated the NIKE AIR logo as a self-expressive kind of graffiti art
stressing the notion of liberty and freedom. Lots of un-proportional,
illogical, imaginative and creative accessories are found within the logo
such as a rainbow, a cloud with an eye, a finger with a fire, and a pair of
clapping hands from the red running shoe with a sun behind. For the
matter of background, Work (a) is a recreational event in Canada, an
English-speaking nation but is recorded with a large amount of
Overseas-Chinese residents. This Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival
is to give comfort to these Chinese residents with homesick sentiments
to their mother-nation, so that they can celebrate the traditional Chinese
festivals even not living in Mainland China or Hong Kong. Work (b) is for
supporting Suzuki Lisa as a pretty Japanese athlete for joining the Osaka
Marathon on behalf of the NIKE Company in order to advertise the brand
and good functions of NIKE’s product. The logo design is solely for the
marketing on Suzuki Lisa’s image because she is the cored and only
ambassador for this running scheme, and so the stylish decorative
elements are only for suiting Suzuki Lisa’s energetic sporty personality.
16
Indeed, Work (a) is for encouraging Caucasians, Asians and Blacks to
abandon their cultural and religious differences for jointly pursuing
sportsmanship from the dragon boat race, just like how the Confucian
culture of China stressing the universal idea of utopian harmony. Work (b)
is an American-Japanese cultural collaboration in promoting sport
products with advanced technological elements, and you can see that
both cultures are not that distant in ideological thinkings at all. If we look
at the Second World War histories, we know that both the US and Japan
are keen at naval and air-force conquests. Their personalities get use to
be progressive in exploring adventurous challenges even dealing with
athletic sports like marathons, which can be regarded as legitimately
upholding the Western culture.
Work (a) is a successful piece of digital narrative drawing by using
Adobe Illustrator as software. There are clear human figures, clear
architectures and clear landscape features inside Steve Wong’s poster
design. His neat distribution of formal typographies is in accordance
with the official advertisements from the level of civil-servant sectors
and huge enterprises. Steven Wong accomplishes to serve as a
rule-abiding editor with efficient customer-service and executive ability
as his refined capabilities in ensuring no mistakes from the competition
information can definitely be acknowledged by the employers from the
publishing firms. He can issue newsletters and magazines with proper
propagandistic layout visions. Work (b) reflects that even though Jared
Nickerson claims himself as a prominent designer, he ironically behaves
like a nonchalant fine artist with unrestrained and unplanned character.
Jared Nickerson just treated the NIKE AIR logo as a piece of fine art, only
for the fact that the medium of drawing is “Adobe Illustrator”. Jared
Nickerson can only work as a freelancer to wait for sincere patron’s
adoption on his artistic creations, as publishing firms cannot trust him
by employing him as a full-time designer because he shows no
sensitivity to the formal norms of layout editorials at all and his
over-artistic character will definitely and easily deserve complaints from
the advertisement clients once he cannot strictly fulfill their dogmatic
editorial requirements. To conclude, Work (a) is a piece of design in
Chinese obedient culture, whereas Work (b) is a piece of design in
Western rebellious culture.
17
Remember, there is no need to know all the design works from the world! Unlike the
Chinese art histories from the “Visual Presentation of a Theme” exampaper which
you can study the masterpieces from Tang to Qing Dynasties, you can no longer tip
which designers’ works will be adopted for question-making. Just remember some
cored aesthetic theories and then you can elaborate. Follow the structures provided
by the HKEAA marking scheme, and make your analysis as precise as possible:
1. Literal description: Commonalities and Differences
2. Formal Analysis: Colours, compositions and backgrounds
3. Interpretation of Meaning
4. Value Judgment
APPENDIX 1
There would be lots of questions about making classical designs, such as wedding
package, menu for Western restaurants, box cover for the Western cake desserts,
brochure for a Catholic Mass and advertisement for lady cosmetics. These tasks of
graphic designs badly request the fonts of classical and feministic Western
pen-calligraphies, but not all the VA teachers manage to teach this field of
hand-drawn typography.
Since June 2019, I serve as a Tutor of Western Calligraphy Course at YWCA Sai Wan
Social Centre for the Elderly. Up to now, my students manage to write the English
messages in Gothic and Italic fonts. Especially for Italic font, it requires the elegant
elongation of particular strokes as highlights. This can be a good reference for the
DSE VA Design examcandidates.
Whenever some important festivals come ahead, I will arrange a collective creative
task for my Western Calligraphy students at YWCA, which is to write greeting cards.
My students are very serious, as they would also add some extra decorative
elements to the card surfaces after writing out the calligraphic greetings. I praise
them that they are actually gifted in graphic designs, and the fonts I have taught
them have greatly enriched their design contexts.
My Western Calligraphy Course at YWCA has reached the fifth new series of
admission, and 15 students are recruited for opening the course in February 2020.
Here you can appreciate their pretty designs:

APPENDIX 2
George Au is a contestant in the “KingMaker II” contest of ViuTV channel. He
successfully entered the final round as one of the 10 top-ranked elites. George Au is
given a nickname called “George Wawa”, as his facial appearance is very cute indeed.
The term “Wawa” can be explained as “doll”, in which George’s sparkling eyes are
very beautiful that makes him look teddy. George is a cute “Teddy George”.
After the “KingMaker II” contest, George Au, together with Champion winner
Phoebus Ng and other “KingMaker” twinks, were invited by a secondary school to
conduct performances for her Christmas Ball. George discovered a pretty installation
from the Art Room of that secondary school while the Student Union representatives
from there led him and other “KingMaker” twinks to enjoy a campus visit. This
installation reflects a very inspiring design concept with philosophical virtues. George
took a photo and uploaded this SBA portfolio exhibit to the “Stories” session of his
Instagramaccount.
George is responsible for several important tasks in ViuTV channel. First, he, together
with Phoebus Ng, Oscar Li and JJ, has just engaged in the “KingMaker On-line Game
Contest Pop-Star Singing Show” sponsored by Pok Oi Hospital. This is an innovative
charity show with youthful elements. Second, he and Phoebus Ng, together with two
members of “Error”, were assigned to take part in the hosting for “Fortune-Telling for
21
Good Lucks in the Year of Rat” programme on the First Day of the Lunar New Year.
Going back to the installation that George Au appreciated, this piece of art exhibit
can be classified as design as well. Baby Tak Lung’s case of entry to Poly U Design was
due to the appreciation from Kacey Wong, a lecturer from Poly U Design with
academic emphasis on sculpture art. Indeed, sculpture-making can be seen as 3D
design as well. Kacey Wong is a contemporary fine artist with no doubt, but he can
teach 3D design courses at Poly U Design and guide his apprentices to explore the
creation of installation art. For the case of HKBU Academy of Visual Arts, if a Year 2
student has chosen “Design Art” as his professional concentration, he/she can
choose to study Furniture Design and go into the Sculpture Room of Kai Tak Campus
for cutting the wooden boards. Of course, the DSE VA exam only requires candidates
to deal with graphic and advertising designs. But, DSE VA students can actually
explore the creation of a 3D design work as one of their four SBA portfolios. The fruit
of the 3D design can be documented as photographs and frame them onto a black
cardboard. This cardboard presentation must be complemented by a booklet
presentation during the submission to the HKEAA.

Educational Focus - DSE VA Design Paper

  • 1. 1 Educational Focus: Examination skills for the Design Paper of DSE Visual Arts Atelier de Belas-Artes do Vincent Lee Many people might have this perception: “Fine Arts requires certain capabilities in doing researches because of studying art histories, such as focusing on Chinese art histories once being admitted to CUHK Fine Arts. But, Design doesn’t require any research capabilities as such writing tasks are irrelevant to the software tasks within the industrial field.” To a very large extent, this perception is quite correct. But, for some very exceptional case, some BA Design graduates from Poly U Design might be acknowledged by their Design professors: “I can see that your performance in Art Histories, Art Theories, Aesthetic Studies, Design Histories and Design Theories subjects are quite distinguished. Can you choose not to apply for designer jobs outside the campus after graduation? Stay behind in our university, and get promoted to be a postgraduate for doing design researches and serving as a tutor then!” This slight portion of lucky undergraduates might consider a unique path of stable careerdevelopment instead of ambitious entrepreneurship, but our scholastic mechanism also badly needs certain experts like this. Indeed, there is a programme from Poly U Design called “MDen” (Master of Design). It is taught by renowned foreign professors. If you have such chance of studying this taught-based MDen,
  • 2. 2 your previous skills in Art Appreciation during your DSE VA Design exam would then be applicable! I did have a 90s-born friend called Dixon Ngai Tak-lung who is an expert in porcelain painting, and he graduated from Poly U Design in “Interior Design” stream. Baby Tak Lung told me that, he was required to study a compulsory course called “Concepts of Contemporary Chinese and Western Art”. He decided to write about the Neo-Ink Painting of Lu Shoukun and Kan Tai-keung. Thus he obtained a very good result. Of course, he also needed to study certain Design Histories and Design Theories courses. There arefive concentrations from Poly U Design, namely “Visual Communication”, “Interior Design”, “Advertising Design”, “Product Design & Innovations” and “Fashion Design & Textile Studies”. No matter for which stream, it is definitely impossible that all the courses a student takes within his three to four years of undergraduate studies are purely about “software trainings”. There must be 30% courses being reserved for other kinds of liberal-arts learning within the mechanism of Poly U Design’s curriculum planning. Some might take drawing and 3D-making courses as free electives of “Applied Arts”, whereas all students must take a sufficient amount of compulsory theory subjects. So, this arrangement provides an alternative room for some persons who are good at fine arts and not too good at software but do not know why he would get a Poly U Design offer to get a passing Cumulative GPA before the Commencement, as this type of extraordinary persons can get a Second-Up or Second-Low Honour through just obtaining Distinctions from “Applied Arts” and “Theories” subjects but perform poor in “Software” subjects. So, do not underestimate the effectiveness of Art Appreciation from DSE VA Design exam! The Aptitude Test before the Second-Round Portfolio Interview of Poly U Design admission also badly requires potential candidates with solid capabilities in “DSE VA Design Appreciation & Criticism”. For the exam paper of Aptitude Test, there are questions like “logo design”, “event management”, “design knowledge” and even “political studies & social sciences”. For the “event management”, I did encounter a request which was to draw a storyboard-liked diagramfor illustrating how I would plan for a wedding banquet, with an addition of writing certain idea-descriptions. For the “political studies & social sciences” evaluation, there was a question called “Which political party will you votefor during the upcoming LegCo Election? Explain why.” My classmate answered in a legitimately pro-Beijing manner: “To me, I am not interested in politics. But if you ask me to vote, I will definitely not vote for Democratic Party because it only creates lots of chaos in our society”. Finally, my classmate was disqualified from entering the Second-Round Portfolio Interview even though her works were usually acknowledged as very trendy in design awareness. For me, even though I am currently a “non-anti-Extradition” and a “light blue ribbon”, I pretended to be very critical to Tung Chee-hwa and Jiang Zemin’s
  • 3. 3 administration once encountering my “Aptitude Test” exam paper. I answered this political question in this way: “I will definitely vote for Democratic Party and Civic Party. First, the June 4 Massacre must be vindicated. Second, the SARS outbreak was the fault of Beijing due to Jiang Zemin’s refusal in condemning Huang Huahua’s connivance on Guangdong citizens’ spreading of viruses to Hong Kong and resigning Huang Huahua. Third, it is dangerous for Hong Kong to get the Article 23 implemented. Thus, we must rely on the pan-democratic legislators to restrain the dictatorship of Communist China.” Finally, Poly U Design gave me a pass in this Aptitude Test, and let me enter the Second-Round Portfolio Interview even though I was just carrying my SBA oil paintings from Rosaryhill School to the Poly U lecture room. Here I deeply thanked Poly U Design and Prof. Jin-Guang TENG for appreciating my creativetalents during this JUPAS admission experience in 2006 despite of Prof. Jenny SO Fong-suk’s brutal neglect on my eagerness in entering CUHK Fine Arts. So, this experience from “Aptitude Test” in “Visual Communication” concentration proves that, if you manage to write Design Appreciation essays pretty well during your DSE VA exam, your intellectual mind will be greatly broadened that you can render diversified tricky liberal-arts questions in the Poly U Design admission process. Talking about the matter of the creativedesign task in DSE VA Design exam, it requires a solid level of traditional craftsmanship in typographies, layout editorial and chrominance keying. Those who are very good at digital-image pasting and can brainstorm lots of creativegimmicks but with very weak skills of refining the hand-drawn graphics cannot get good marks in DSE VA Design exam. Moreover, it will definitely be advantageous for those persons who often pay attentions to the commercial advertisements inside the MTR train platforms. Most of the Design questions from HKEAA areabout graphic design, in which it must be equivalent to advertising design. This aforesaid type of persons paying attention to MTR advertisements has the talents in imitating the compositions and human structures of the MTR advertisements even just using markers and watercolours as drawing tools. At HKBU School of Communication, there is an academic department called “Public Relations & Advertising” (PRA), and students from there often do analyzes on the photographic effects of employed ambassador models, together with the brainstorming of remarkable slogans/messages showing remarkable typographic effects. Drawing logos are so easy, but drawing an MTR advertisement is difficult. If you can handle the latter task, you will feel confident in obtaining Grade 5** from the DSE VA Design exam.
  • 4. 4 Here are some successful examples for the “narrative” realm of “Design” exam with Distinction grades guaranteed, which are as creative as the effects of MTR advertisements: Title: Chateau de Bordeaux – a menu design for a French restaurant Title of left piece: The Wetland Park Phase 2 – advertisement design for a park Title of right piece: Be a Law-Abiding Citizen – poster design for an art competition

  • 14. 14 Demonstrationfor writing agood piece of aesthetic comparison: Part A: Design appreciation and Criticism 1. (A) Compare, contrast and analyze the design concepts, layouts and visual effects of the two advertising works below. (20 marks) (a) “Concord Pacific Boat Festival” organized by DRAGONBOATBC.CA in Canada  Designer: Steve Wong (b) “NIKE AIR – The Elemental” organized by NIKE in the United States: a logo design for a sponsorship scheme to Suzuki Lisa, a renowned Japanese athlete, to participate in the Osaka Marathon 2019  Designer: Jared Nickerson How to write a piece of good essay...... Work (a) is a piece of poster design by DRAGONOATBC.CA with formal digital illustrations, whereas Work (b) is a piece of logo design by a NIKE
  • 15. 15 designer called Jared Nickerson with a digitalized graffiti-liked free composition. Both pieces consistently adopted light blue as background for expressing an oceanic effect of optimism, as Steve Wong focused on the description of waves and Jared Nickerson focused on the plain sea with clouds and thunders from the logo as decorative elements. For differences, Work (a) describes a collective watery sport called Dragon Boat Festival, whereas Work (b) describes an individualistic marathon pursuit with a prior emphasis on promoting training shoes for potential runners. From Work (a), you can see that the dragon boat is in brown yellow which is the cored focal point, whereas the contesters are in different skin colours showing a cross-racial harmony. From Work (b), a great portion of the logo is in wooden brown, whereas a running shoe on the lower left corner and the rainbow are found of purple. The composition of Work (a) is quite formal, as Steve Wong had to care for the neat distribution of competition information as priority so that the iconographies must be placed in a formal pattern without much dynamic motions. The composition of Work (b) is quite free-styled. Jared Nickerson never cares about the layout-editorial norms as serious as Steve Wong from Work (a), as he treated the NIKE AIR logo as a self-expressive kind of graffiti art stressing the notion of liberty and freedom. Lots of un-proportional, illogical, imaginative and creative accessories are found within the logo such as a rainbow, a cloud with an eye, a finger with a fire, and a pair of clapping hands from the red running shoe with a sun behind. For the matter of background, Work (a) is a recreational event in Canada, an English-speaking nation but is recorded with a large amount of Overseas-Chinese residents. This Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival is to give comfort to these Chinese residents with homesick sentiments to their mother-nation, so that they can celebrate the traditional Chinese festivals even not living in Mainland China or Hong Kong. Work (b) is for supporting Suzuki Lisa as a pretty Japanese athlete for joining the Osaka Marathon on behalf of the NIKE Company in order to advertise the brand and good functions of NIKE’s product. The logo design is solely for the marketing on Suzuki Lisa’s image because she is the cored and only ambassador for this running scheme, and so the stylish decorative elements are only for suiting Suzuki Lisa’s energetic sporty personality.
  • 16. 16 Indeed, Work (a) is for encouraging Caucasians, Asians and Blacks to abandon their cultural and religious differences for jointly pursuing sportsmanship from the dragon boat race, just like how the Confucian culture of China stressing the universal idea of utopian harmony. Work (b) is an American-Japanese cultural collaboration in promoting sport products with advanced technological elements, and you can see that both cultures are not that distant in ideological thinkings at all. If we look at the Second World War histories, we know that both the US and Japan are keen at naval and air-force conquests. Their personalities get use to be progressive in exploring adventurous challenges even dealing with athletic sports like marathons, which can be regarded as legitimately upholding the Western culture. Work (a) is a successful piece of digital narrative drawing by using Adobe Illustrator as software. There are clear human figures, clear architectures and clear landscape features inside Steve Wong’s poster design. His neat distribution of formal typographies is in accordance with the official advertisements from the level of civil-servant sectors and huge enterprises. Steven Wong accomplishes to serve as a rule-abiding editor with efficient customer-service and executive ability as his refined capabilities in ensuring no mistakes from the competition information can definitely be acknowledged by the employers from the publishing firms. He can issue newsletters and magazines with proper propagandistic layout visions. Work (b) reflects that even though Jared Nickerson claims himself as a prominent designer, he ironically behaves like a nonchalant fine artist with unrestrained and unplanned character. Jared Nickerson just treated the NIKE AIR logo as a piece of fine art, only for the fact that the medium of drawing is “Adobe Illustrator”. Jared Nickerson can only work as a freelancer to wait for sincere patron’s adoption on his artistic creations, as publishing firms cannot trust him by employing him as a full-time designer because he shows no sensitivity to the formal norms of layout editorials at all and his over-artistic character will definitely and easily deserve complaints from the advertisement clients once he cannot strictly fulfill their dogmatic editorial requirements. To conclude, Work (a) is a piece of design in Chinese obedient culture, whereas Work (b) is a piece of design in Western rebellious culture.
  • 17. 17 Remember, there is no need to know all the design works from the world! Unlike the Chinese art histories from the “Visual Presentation of a Theme” exampaper which you can study the masterpieces from Tang to Qing Dynasties, you can no longer tip which designers’ works will be adopted for question-making. Just remember some cored aesthetic theories and then you can elaborate. Follow the structures provided by the HKEAA marking scheme, and make your analysis as precise as possible: 1. Literal description: Commonalities and Differences 2. Formal Analysis: Colours, compositions and backgrounds 3. Interpretation of Meaning 4. Value Judgment APPENDIX 1 There would be lots of questions about making classical designs, such as wedding package, menu for Western restaurants, box cover for the Western cake desserts, brochure for a Catholic Mass and advertisement for lady cosmetics. These tasks of graphic designs badly request the fonts of classical and feministic Western pen-calligraphies, but not all the VA teachers manage to teach this field of hand-drawn typography. Since June 2019, I serve as a Tutor of Western Calligraphy Course at YWCA Sai Wan Social Centre for the Elderly. Up to now, my students manage to write the English messages in Gothic and Italic fonts. Especially for Italic font, it requires the elegant elongation of particular strokes as highlights. This can be a good reference for the DSE VA Design examcandidates. Whenever some important festivals come ahead, I will arrange a collective creative task for my Western Calligraphy students at YWCA, which is to write greeting cards. My students are very serious, as they would also add some extra decorative elements to the card surfaces after writing out the calligraphic greetings. I praise them that they are actually gifted in graphic designs, and the fonts I have taught them have greatly enriched their design contexts. My Western Calligraphy Course at YWCA has reached the fifth new series of admission, and 15 students are recruited for opening the course in February 2020. Here you can appreciate their pretty designs:

  • 20. 20 APPENDIX 2 George Au is a contestant in the “KingMaker II” contest of ViuTV channel. He successfully entered the final round as one of the 10 top-ranked elites. George Au is given a nickname called “George Wawa”, as his facial appearance is very cute indeed. The term “Wawa” can be explained as “doll”, in which George’s sparkling eyes are very beautiful that makes him look teddy. George is a cute “Teddy George”. After the “KingMaker II” contest, George Au, together with Champion winner Phoebus Ng and other “KingMaker” twinks, were invited by a secondary school to conduct performances for her Christmas Ball. George discovered a pretty installation from the Art Room of that secondary school while the Student Union representatives from there led him and other “KingMaker” twinks to enjoy a campus visit. This installation reflects a very inspiring design concept with philosophical virtues. George took a photo and uploaded this SBA portfolio exhibit to the “Stories” session of his Instagramaccount. George is responsible for several important tasks in ViuTV channel. First, he, together with Phoebus Ng, Oscar Li and JJ, has just engaged in the “KingMaker On-line Game Contest Pop-Star Singing Show” sponsored by Pok Oi Hospital. This is an innovative charity show with youthful elements. Second, he and Phoebus Ng, together with two members of “Error”, were assigned to take part in the hosting for “Fortune-Telling for
  • 21. 21 Good Lucks in the Year of Rat” programme on the First Day of the Lunar New Year. Going back to the installation that George Au appreciated, this piece of art exhibit can be classified as design as well. Baby Tak Lung’s case of entry to Poly U Design was due to the appreciation from Kacey Wong, a lecturer from Poly U Design with academic emphasis on sculpture art. Indeed, sculpture-making can be seen as 3D design as well. Kacey Wong is a contemporary fine artist with no doubt, but he can teach 3D design courses at Poly U Design and guide his apprentices to explore the creation of installation art. For the case of HKBU Academy of Visual Arts, if a Year 2 student has chosen “Design Art” as his professional concentration, he/she can choose to study Furniture Design and go into the Sculpture Room of Kai Tak Campus for cutting the wooden boards. Of course, the DSE VA exam only requires candidates to deal with graphic and advertising designs. But, DSE VA students can actually explore the creation of a 3D design work as one of their four SBA portfolios. The fruit of the 3D design can be documented as photographs and frame them onto a black cardboard. This cardboard presentation must be complemented by a booklet presentation during the submission to the HKEAA.
