'LOOKING BACK AT YOUR
PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU
FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL
PRODUCT?'
• Our Preliminary exercise was a to produce a short clip of a person opening a door, sitting down in a
chair to have a brief conversation with someone one on the opposite side of the table and then getting
up to leave. Throughout we had to think about how we were filming it, making sure that in the process
we were keeping continuity and we used certain techniques to make sure we didn’t break it. We used a
variety of techniques for transitions such as cutting for a close up of the character walking down the
corridor to a long shot of them approaching the door while the action continues over into the next shot
creating a smooth, clean transitional shot. We also used a match on action cutting from the long shot
of the character going to open the door to a close up shot of them pulling down the handle to open it,
along with that we also used the 180 degree rule which is an imaginary line which the camera should
never cross because it would flip the characters around, so for instance we had our main character (the
Student) on the left and our other character (the Teacher) on the right so if we cross over the 180 line,
the characters would now be flipped disorientating the audience as the position of the characters will
look as if they’ve changed.
• Our Preliminary exercise taught us a lot to when it comes to planning, filming and
editing as it showed us what we could improve upon the next time round because
when it came to the day of filming we didn’t have a completed script for our
Preliminary task and most of the dialogue was improvised on the spot but with our
final product this changes, as we planned correctly and created a shooting script
that we could follow on the day.
• Since our Preliminary exercise we have developed our knowledge and
understanding of planning, filming and editing, this involves scripts, shot types and
editing techniques that would improve our final product because we learnt how to
create mood and atmosphere through shots and effects.
