QUESTION 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what
do you feel you have learnt in the progression
from it to the final product?
BRIEF
• The main aim we were given for our preliminary project
was to keep it continuous and for it to run smooth with no
jumps.
• We were given three shots that had to be included in the
short film which were; Shot Reverse Shot, 180 degree line
and Match on Action.
• We did this by filming a conversation between two people
to achieve the Shot Reverse Shot and the 180 degree line
and we filmed a person walking through a door and sitting
down with a close up on the door handle to achieve the
Match on Action.
FINAL PROJECT
• We had to create an original plot line for our final project
and then proceed to create the first two minutes of this
film.
• We used the skills we used in the preliminary task to help
us create our film.
180 DEGREE RULE
• In our preliminary exercise we showed the 180 degree
rule by never crossing a line for example we stayed on
the same side of the characters whilst the conversation
was taking place.
• In our final project we did the same thing by keeping the
camera over the shoulders of the characters so that the
shots would have the same background so one shot
would be over the male’s left shoulder and then over the
female’s right.
MATCH ON ACTION
• The Match on Action in our preliminary exercise was
having someone walk to the door and open it with a close
up to the hand on the handle of the door.
• This type of shot can be seen in our final project when the
male character is walking along the corridor as we had to
match his legs so that the same leg was moving between
the two clips.
SHOT REVERSE SHOT
• This shot can be seen in our preliminary exercise when
the two characters are having a conversation. We shot it
as an over the shoulder shot which proved effective in
keeping the conversation flowing whilst showing both
characters talking.
• In our preliminary exercise this shot can be seen when
the female character is walking towards the camera and it
cuts to a close up of the male characters face from
behind.
SHOT REVERSE SHOT
• Preliminary exercise:
SHOT REVERSE SHOT
• Final project:
ANY IMPROVEMENTS?
• One of the main things that improved between our
preliminary exercise and the final project is our editing.
The editing in our final project is smoother than in our
preliminary exercise.
• Also the shots and camera angles are better in the final
project as we learnt from our mistakes. This can be seen
on our match on action shots in the final film as it is a lot
smoother and the transition rolls better than in our
preliminary exercise were it doesn’t line up as well as it
could have.
