2. PLANNING
The planning stage is one of the key differences between the
preliminary and the opening.
With the preliminary not a lot of planning went into the idea, we
discussed that we wanted to have a gangster theme and went from
there and started filming.
Whereas with the opening, we thought of 3 narrative ideas took a
week to decide on our final idea. We made a podcast discussing the
reasons for why we chose the final idea, we then storyboarded the
idea and created an animatics showing specific shots and
transitions
3. PLANNING
For the opening the planning continued with:
Storyboarding our idea
Planning the character's costume
Creating a timeline for when and where the filming and editing will
take place.
6. Improvements
The transitions used are better and
allow the opening to flow better than
the preliminary. E.g. Dissolve edit and
cuts
In the preliminary the transitions we
chose were chosen as we thought they
looked good, however looking back
there is no flow between the scenes
In the Opening we used transitions to
create meaning for example the fading
in and out of two scenes to show the
scenes taking place at the same time.
7. Improvements
The use of text is merged into the
visual whereas in “The Drop Off” all
the credits are at the very beginning
and the end.
During the editing of the preliminary
we just assumed the credits always
came at the end.
In the opening, after watching many
opening’s to get ideas we noticed
that about 20 credits play during the
opening. So we added in the credits
so that our opening would look as
real as possible.
8. Improvements
We used a variety of camera techniques –
Over the shoulder shot, extreme close
ups, slow pans, point of view shots,
ground level shot, long shots, different
focuses and match on action
In the preliminary our shot reverse shot
was not entirely aliened and and the
match on action was rushed.
In the opening the match on action that
was created flowed extremely well both
times.
9. Other Improvements
In our final piece one thing we should of added was a clear
representation of the 180 degree rule.
The equipment was also better for our final piece which made it
easier to make.
10. How successful?
Overall, I think our final thriller opening was successful also I feel that I
have improved from the preliminary task. I have learned a lot about how
much work goes into film-making from the idea to the final edit. I have
learned how to use camera techniques that I clearly did not know how to
use in my preliminary, such as soft focus.
Our final piece was successful as we made sure that the opening
conformed to the thriller genre, by using certain music and establishing
our protagonist and antagonist within the opening.
