2. JOAN OF ARC
The Maid of
Heaven Joan of Arc, nicknamed "The
Maid of Orléans," was born
in 1412 in Domrémy, Bar,
France. A national heroine
of France, Joan of Arc led
the French army to victory
over the British at Orléans,
at age 18. Captured a year
later, Joan was burned by
the English and their French
collaborators as a heretic.
She was canonized as a Roman
Catholic saint 500 years
later, on May 16, 1920.
 In modern times, some doctors and scholars
have “diagnosed” Joan of Arc with disorders
ranging from epilepsy to schizophrenia.
 While commander of the French army, Joan
of Arc didn’t participate in active combat.
 Joan of Arc had a famously volatile temper.
 Joan of Arc inspired the ever-popular bob
haircut, which originated in Paris in 1909.

struggle between England and France
over succession to the French throne,
lasting from 1337 to 1453. English
forces dominate France for decades
until a teenage girl Jeanne d'Arc (Joan
of Arc), a remarkable young mystic,
leads the French troops to reclaim their
lands.
