4. This event ended with the monarchy in France.
A republic was established. It would lead the world to a
new political and social order.
The middle-class (bourgueoisie) forced this revolution
through the new ideas of the Enlightment.
Unfortunately, these expected changes were frozen by
Napoleon’s dictatorship and France became an Empire
between 1804-1814.

French and Spanish formed an alliance to fight British naval army
10. Napoleón joined French army with Spanish naval
army in an alliance against the British army.
It has been described as one of the most relevant
events in the politics of the XIX Century.
The result of this battle was the defeat of
Spanish and French and the victory of the British.
11. GODOY AND THE TREATY OF FONTANABLEAU 1807
Manuel Godoy was a friend of Carlos IV and the Queen Mª Luisa. Soon, he became the Minister taking relevant decisions. One of those was the Treaty of
Fontanableau, signed with Napoleón. It gave the French troops permission to enter Spain. The objecctive was to invade Portugal (a British allied).

They claimed the abdication
of Carlos IV and the crowning
of Fernando as the King.
14. Napoleón met Carlos IV and Fernando in
Bayona. Both signed the abdication and gave
the power of ruling Spain to Napoleón. This
astonishing event is known as the
ABDICATIONS OF BAYONA (1808)
15. Napoleón gave the Spanish Crown to his brother
José.

16. Most of Spanish people did not accept this new King. Riots and battles began to take place in
1808 Riot of Mamelucos, or the great Battle of Bailén, etc.
17. The 1st Spanish Constitution was written in Cádiz in 1812. Fernando promised to support this
Constitution but when he became King in 1814 he revoked the Constitution.
18. 1814
José I gave up ruling Spain.
Fernando VII became the new King FERNANDO VII.
End of the Spanish War of Independence.
This year is also the end of Napoleón’s
Empire.
