“The Execution of a King” 
On January 20, 1793, the National Convention condemned Louis XVI to 
death, his execution scheduled for the next day. Louis spent that evening 
saying goodbye to his wife and children. The following day dawned cold 
and wet. Louis arose at five. At eight o'clock a guard of 1,200 horsemen 
arrived to escort the former king on a two-hour carriage ride to his place of 
execution…
Maximilien Robespierre (A Jacobin leader) 
● Became leader of the Committee of Public 
Safety 
● Governed France as a dictator 
● Had thousands of people killed who were 
suspected to be against him 
● He was arrested & executed (Beheaded) in 
● July, 1794 
● Radical phase of revolution ended!

A Stabilizing Influence: 
● Loyalists attacked the National Convention(Gov’t) 
● Napoleon seized power (1795) 
● By 1799 Directory lost control 
● Napoleon & his troops bring situation under 
control 
● He becomes dictator (1st Consul)
The Napoleonic Code 
● Was a new system of laws 
● Ended many injustices 
● they limited liberty & promoted order 
● Restrictions on freedom of speech & the press
