2. INTRODUCTION
The Spanish war of independence was an armed conflict that
erupted with the French invasion in Spain with the intention of
installing José Bonaparte, brother of Napoleón I, on the Spanish
throne.
6. THE CORTES OF CADIZ(1812)
Liberals: supporters of revolutionary reforms, inspired by the
principles of the French Revolution.
Absolutists: favour the maintenance of the old regime (absolute
monarchy estates, mercantilist economy).
7. CAUSES
* French troops of Napoleon cross the Peninsula under the pretext of invading
Portugal.
* There is a popular uprising called "Mutín de Aranjuez" to criticize the
settlement of the French in Spain (it is said that it was Fernando VII who motivated
this riot against his own father, Carlos IV.)
* Napoleon takes advantage of the disagreements between father and son to
quote them in Bayonne (France). There he holds them back and forces them to
renounce the Spanish crown.
* Napoleon named King of Spain to his brother Joseph Bonaparte I.

* political disrepute of the Spanish monarchy: developments in El
Escorial and Aranjuez
* Economic crisis.
* The French uprising, caused the expansion of these.
