  1. Research indicates most decisions are made within 5 minutes of the interview… Why do you think this is so?
  2. Survey class to determine the last time they had a job interview? Write down on board(use to acknowledge experience in the room with this technique) Days, weeks, months or years Does anyone have a job interview coming up soon? If so, maybe that person may wish to volunteer demo to class first
  3. Emphasize for the purpose of our time, we are focusing on behavioral based interviews and the STAR technique that can be used What preparation was taken to prepare for the interview? If you feel the interview went well, identify at least one thing that went well, then identify at least one thing that you wished you had done differently Some suggestions might be: I got my point across I got the job I answered questions fully I wished I prepared better I answered only one part of the question I was finished too quickly I rambled
  4. Competencies refer to skills or knowledge that lead to superior performance. They are formed through an individual/org knowledge,skills and abilities and provide a framework for distinguishing between poor performances through to exceptional performance. What helps people get results Pass out job samples with highlighted words already to show what it is or Ask class if they have been a hiring manager-how did they ensure their future prospects embodied these competencies
  5. The benefit of this technique is two fold, As a hiring manager: ensure your job description includes behaviors that you want from a candidate utilize the STAR method as a means to take notes to ensure the candidate has the skills you are looking for or not As an applicant: allows you to show the skills you have by citing examples from past work experiences can decrease your anxiety level by having relevant, measurable stories from your work hx, school experiences etc. ready for sharing
  6. Provide handout Need demo of the method I will be interviewed by someone in class Define each letter of the star technique
  7. Provide each student with an interview question and interviewer guide for notetaking as well as the Dissect Your Story handout Process pair by pair Ask how did it feel, was this natural for you?
