Abstract
• To minimize the adverse environmental effects associated with
the use of cutting fluids.
• The hazardous components from their formulations have to be
eliminated.
• In addition, mostly chemical based cutting fluids are going to
be replaced with vegetable based cutting fluids since they are
environmentally friendly.
Cutting Fluids
• Cutting fluid is a type of coolant and lubricant specially designed for
metal cutting operations.
• In general cutting fluid includes oils,
oil-water emulsions, gels, aerosols, and
air or other gases
• It may be referred as cutting fluid,
cutting oil, coolant, lubricant.
Types of Cutting Fluids
• SOLUBLE OILS:- It consists of mineral oil,
emulsifier, rust inhibitor.
• SYNTHETIC OILS:- It consists of synthetic
chemicals and substitutes.
• SEMI SYNTHETYIC OILS:- It contains partially
mineral oil and synthetic chemicals.
• STRAIGHT CUTTING OILS:- It consists of
petrol based mineral oils.
Functions of cutting fluid
• Carries away the generated heat during machining.
• Acts as lubricant at friction zones.
• Break the chips into small pieces.
• Washes away the chips from tool.
• Produces the better surface finish.
• Reduce tool wear and improves
tool life.
Characteristics of cutting fluid
• Cooling capacity
• Lubrication Qualities
• Resistance to rancidity
• Relatively low viscosity
• Stability
• Rust resistant
• Non-toxic
• Non-flammable
Eco Friendly Cutting Fluids
• Bio-based cutting fluids that are eco-friendly, renewable, less
poisonous and high biodegradable.
• These will be replacing the petroleum based cutting fluids.
• Biodegradability is the main aspect.
• These are relatively non-toxic.
• Animal fats, marine oils, vegetable oils, groundnut oil, palm
kernel oil
Why Eco Friendly Cutting Fluids?
• Biodegradable in the environment.
• Mineral oil based formulations can cause
ground water pollution up to 100 years.
• It can reduce the growth of plants and
life span of aquatic life.
• A cutting fluid has many additives to
enhance its performance along with mineral oil
and emulsifiers. These are highly toxic to the
eco-system.
