Mr.J.Mathrubootham - a columnist in the
daily ‘The Hindu’.
From Chennai.
Known to be a comic writer and a
satirist.
He has written many articles making fun
of the happenings in the society in order
to bring in reformation.
3. In this article, the writer satirizes the aspect of man’s unquenchable
desires to want more of things that may or may not suit him.
Instead of being contented with what one has, man always craves or
yearns for what he doesn’t have.
This discontentment in life leads man to an extent where he thinks
‘nothing is best’ in life.
Anything that oversteps the limits in life will ensure dissatisfaction or
discontentment, thereby leading to a state of disappointments and
exasperations.
4. Incident that took place in the neighbourhood family residing in
Chennai to elucidate his idea of overstepping limits.
Prathapan, whose desire for a boy child amidst having two girl
children, forces him to call all Gods irrespective of religious
reservations.
He calls Tirupathi Balaji, Baby Jesus, Gautama Buddha, Guru Nanak,
Thousand Lights Mosque, whichever fellow in Lotus Temple in Delhi
pleading for a boy child.
At last he is gifted with a boy baby who in turn, turns out to be a
miserable failure in academics, music and finally said to have settled in
a job in Dubai known for smuggling.
5. Mrs.Prathapan when enquired about the event of being gifted with a boy child,
desperately remarks that giving birth to Parthipan was like giving birth to a cement
sack.
Here the author satirizes the aspect of obesity which is likely and a normal scene
nowadays.
This is confirmed by the author’s statement, where he said that the boy was 15 kgs
during delivery.
This is an impossible scenario to make the readers think on the concept of obesity
which is a life irking feature of the day.
Parthipan turned out to be a burden rather than to be source of inspiration and joy.
High thoughts of Mr.Prathapan on Parthipan were shattered miserably as he was a
record maker in failing in maximum subjects in Anna Nagar.
6. Overstepping limits will curtail the minimum happiness that life owned.
This idea is reiterated through a personal incident narrated by the writer.
He accounts that once Mrs.Mathrubootham referred as Mrs.M in the article,
took a day to enjoy with her college day friends giving room for writer to
manage his food by himself.
This freedom follows the words of contempt by Mrs.M remarking the writer
to be a water buffalo enjoying nap till 6 pm in the evening.
This highlights the general lethargic attitude of men folks these days. When
the writer takes the comment hilariously, Mrs. M threatens him by telling,
“…I will put Baygon in your tea, Mind it!”
The private conversation between a wife and a husband has turned out to be
so dismal yet casual.
7. With utmost happiness and complacency, Mr.Mathrubootham decides to
enjoy the day alone eating out.
He moves from Hot Chips to Pizza Hut, moving from hotel to hotel willing
to taste Rajasthani Thali food, Pizza etc., returns without enjoying anything
for various reasons like, “Too boring. Too heavy. Too sweet. Too expensive.
Too much calories.”
Finally he remarks that he satisfies his belly singing like Balamuralikrishna,
with the same old ‘Pav Bhaji’ and returns home to find in exasperation that
his wife has enjoyed Gujarathi Thali food and Pizza.
The pain of enjoying nothing is at its height and yet pulls the string tight by
knowing that his wife enjoyed everything what he wanted to.
The writer strongly advocates not wanting more and more and waiting for it,
but being contented with what one has to enjoy life to the fullest extent.
