◆ An Astrologer’s Day :
By, R.K.Narayan
Author’s Introduction :
 Born :- 10 October,1906
 Died :- 13 May,2001
 Full Name :- “Rasipuram Krishnaswami Iyer
Narayanaswami”
 one of the best known novelists among Indian
English writers
 fourteen novels, five volumesof short stories, and a
number of travelogues, and has a collection of non-
fiction to his credit.
Continue...
 He also wrote his memoir 'My Days' (1975) in it he create a
imaginary town known as 'Malgudy' where he had some
realistic characters. In his novel we have a typically Indian
setting, characterization and events.
 He always wrote about human relationships and the ironies of
Indian daily life.
 "Sahitya Academy Award" in 1961 for "The Guide (1958)"
Synopsis :
 The story is about an Astrologer,Who chose to be one not out of choice
but because of past mysterious situation in his life.At the begging his
appreance is described and its shown that he is a stranger to the stars as
much his clients, but did not how to carry out his profession.
 A client come and asked him “whether he will finds his enemy or not”.
 The astrologer knows the mans name and everything about him and his
enemy.
 How did he knows that? Has he mastered astrology or posses some special
power? - Thik “Guru Nayak”
Continue.....
 Because Astrologer was the man who runs away from his home
and pretends to be an astrologer after imagining that he has
committed a murder. In a strange situation, an ironic twist of fate,
he runs into the very man he thought he had killed.
 So that’s why he knows about this man(Guru Nayak). He has not
masters in the astrology and posses into the natural power.
“Literary Elements”:
Irony
Setting
Point of View
Mood
Imagery
Irony:
 Significance:
● The use of irony is important in this
story.Even in the beginning the author sets a
mood where its hard to tell the difference
between reality and expectations.The Irony
bring the contrast between expectations and
reality out.
●Thiis quots suggest Ironic because the
astrologer says that Guru Nayak had cheated
him by not giving him the rupee. When
actually the astrologer had cheated Guru by
hustling him and pretending that he did not
know him and that his “astrology
techniques”were real.
●Situation in which there is a sharp
incongruity or discordance that goes
beyond the simple and evident intention
of words or action.
“The swine had cheated
me! He promised me a
rupee,”
(Pg 1059)
Setting:
 SIGNIFICANCE:
●The importance of the setting in
this story is that it gives the reader a
better understand of plot in
general. Also knowing the setting
helps the reader better understand
that "place" and the time period" as
well as the culture.
●BACKGROUND:
 India
 Rural atmosphere
 In a city, but readers are not told what city
 However, Narayan created an imaginary city
named “Malgudi”, and it is possible, even
likely, that this story is set there as well. (Not
certain, but probably.)
●The time and place where something, usually a story or play, takes
place.
Point of view :
 SIGNIFICANCE:
●The author included that imagery
because it helps the reader better envision
the type of persona that the astrologer
has. Having all those details about his
appearance makes the character "come to
life" better in the readers head.
● The formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things, or of
such images collectively.
●"The power of his eyes
was considerably
enhanced by sparkle in
such a setting."
(pgs 1055-1056)
Mood :
 SIGNIFICANCE
● The use of that quote to show the mood
is very important. It takes the story from
being in a happy and light situation to
giving it a new dark and depressing mood
in a new paragraph.
●Here The Mood is the atmosphere
created by the setting, and actions of
people and characters in it.
●"The place was deserted by
......green shaft was also gone,
leaving the place in darkness
and silence.“.
(pg 1059)
●(This shows the mood
DEPRESSING and LONLEY)
Imagery :
 SIGNIFICANCE:
●The author uses third person
omniscient to tell the story. That
leaves the narrator in control of
what information is revealed to
the reader. Since he used third
person omniscient, he was able to
reveal parts of the plot without
giving away the ending Also
multiple points of view can be
seen that way.
~Third Person omniscient
● method of storytelling in which the narrator knows
the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters in
the story.
●"Punctually at midday he opened
his day bag and spread out his
professional equipment"
(pg 1055 )
“Significant Title”:
 The Astrologer thought that he had killed Guru Nayak. He has been
carrying the burden of this thought. He is feeling guilty about it. When
Guru Nayak appeared before him as a customer. Astrologer identified
him suddenly. But Guru Nayak could not identify him. The Astrologer
became very happy and relaxed to see Guru Nayak alive. The dark load
of the thought of murder suddenly disappeared. This is the happiest
day in his life, an Astrologer's Day.
●The darkness load that was inside the astrologer has disappeared'.
Through this sentence we explain the significance of the title 'An
Astrologer's Day'.
Conclude Remark :
 So at the end we conclude that the Customer is
the reason for the astrologer’s flight from home
because he is the man the astrologer
stabbed,as he believed to death,so he told that
man were pushed into a well nearby field. You
were left from dead.
