2. Bheri Babai Diversion
Multipurpose Project (BBDMP)
Bheri Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project (BBDMP) is
a multi-basin irrigation cum hydropower project lying in
Surkhet District of Karnali Province in Mid-West Nepal.
The water is diverted from the Bheri River and discharged to Babai River. The project
aims to irrigate 51,000 ha of land in Banke and Bardiya District throughout the year. The
elevation difference between the intake and irrigation area provided an opportunity to
install 46.8 MW firm electricity. The project has a tunnel 12208 meters long that was
constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the first time in Nepal. The project
is owned by the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation. Construction of the
project commenced in 2015 and is expected to complete in 2023. The project is estimated to
cost NPR 30,00,000,0000. As of June 2021, 45% of the construction work is completed.
3. Project description of Bheri Babai Diversion Multi -
Purpose Project (BBDMP)
The headworks of the project is located in Chhote village of Lekhpharsa VDC on the
right bank and Gothiyari village of Ramghat VDC on the left bank of the Bheri River. A
diversion barrage across the Bheri will divert the flow to six intake orifices on the left
bank of river. The flow is then conveyed to a three-bayed settling basin followed by a 12
km long headrace tunnel and 773 m long penstock pipe. A power station will be located
on the right bank of the Babai River. The gross head of the project is 151 m while the
design discharge is 40 m3/s.
4. East West Railway
The East-West Railway Line or the Mechi-Mahakali Railway
is an upcoming project in Nepal. The railway will be the
longest in Nepal stretching 945.244 km (587 mi) expanding
from the Eastern Indo-Nepal border of Kakarbhitta to the Western Indo-Nepal border of
Kanchanpur. Subsidiary lines will be added expanding the total project to 1,376 km (855
mi). The government developed the concept of the East-West Railway in 2007, forming
the Department of Railways in 2011. The project started in 2008, but due to various
economic, environmental and coordination challenges it was delayed until March 2020.
Lack of coordination of inter-governmental bodies and conflicts between the locals and
the construction company for land acquisition and deforestation stimulated controversy.
The proposed route passes through Chitwan National Park, a World Heritage site. The
route was widely criticized and the proposal was rejected by UNESCO. It also was
criticized for threatening rare wildlife.
5. Progress of East West Railway
More than Rs2 billion was spent for land acquisition and research and development,
which will cost some Rs8 billion. The total cost is estimated to reach $3 billion. The initial
track-bed has been laid across the 70 km Bardibas-Nijgadh section. The senior divisional
engineer at the Department of Railways, Aman Chitrakar informed that the tracks will be
laid after the construction of the track-bed from Kakadbhitta, Jhapa to Gaddachauki,
Kanchanpur. A total of Rs 11.22 billion has been spent. The Government of Nepal is
allocating Rs 4 billion annually for the expansion of the railway.
