This document summarizes the Sikta Irrigation Project, one of Nepal's national pride projects. The project aims to irrigate 34,000 hectares of land in Banke district through the West Rapti River. It began in 2005/2006 with an estimated budget of NPR 12.8 billion but has faced delays and cost overruns, with the estimated completion date moved to 2020 and budget increased to NPR 25.02 billion. The project has faced issues including damages during testing and corruption cases totaling over NPR 2 billion brought against contractors by Nepal's Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority.

3. Background
It is one of the National Pride Projects of
Nepal.
It is situated in Banke district of mid
western development region of Nepal.
Project area comprises 34 VDCs and the
municipality of Nepalgunj, which is district
headquarter.
4. Background
GON has therefore given a priority to the
implementation of the large scale Sikta
Irrigation Project which would irrigate about
34,000 hectars of land in the district.
Water source for this project is the West
Rapti River , which originates from the mid
mountains in the Mid Western Region of
the country.

In 2004, the Irrigation
development program under the
EUROPEAN UNION concluded
that the project is feasible by its
own resources.
8. SITE LOCATION
Province No. 5 , in Banke district.
The project study was done from
Germany in 1980
However, the intake is in the Rapti river
in western part of Nepal.

In 2016 a canal section collapsed due to
weak soil properties during testing at
the flow of 5m3 /s
In September, 2017, damages was due to
cross drainage problem.
In 2018, damages in canal were
reported during testing
15. CORRUPTION
The national commission for
Investigation of abuse of Authority
(CIAA) has l0dged a corruption case of
over NPR 2 billion in this project
The case if Kalika construction Bikram
Pandey over the construction of a canal
and 20 staffs.
16. CORRUPTION
CIAA has made claims of Rs 2.13 billion
from Bikram Pandey, NPR 1.56 billion
from Dilip Bahadur Karki and NPR 593.45
million from Saroj Chandra Pandit.
It also claims Rs 24.05 million from
Uddhav Raj Chaulagai, the managing
director of the consulting company
(ERMC).
17. CONCLUSION
The overall objective of the study ids to
assess the consequences of delay and
disputes of selected contracts of Sikta
Irrigation project , Banke, Nepal.
