Policy News
 Subsidies to build floating jetties, ports
The Union Government has announced an INR 400 crore project to develop waterways, of which it will
provide 50 percent subsidy while the states bear the balance 50 percent. The subsidy has allocated INR
10 crore for passenger jetties and INR 25 crore for container/goods jetties. Further, seven new major
ports will be built in addition to the 12 existing ones. Work on the Sagar port in West Bengal and Dahanu
in Maharashtra has already commenced.
 Approval given to 50 solar cities
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has accepted a master plan and issued sanctions to develop
50 solar cities. The cities include New Delhi, Chandigarh, Agra, Gurgaon, Amritsar, Faridabad, New Town
near Kolkata, Shirdi, Howrah, Agra, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Bilaspur, Raipur, Agartala, Kochi, Bhopal,
amongst others. In June 2009, the ministry had nominated 26 consultants to prepare the master plan for
the solar cities.
 Patna included in AMRUT project
Patna is listed among 26 cities/towns of Bihar in the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban
Transformation (AMRUT) project. The mission has been allocated INR 50,000 crore for the development
of infrastructure and amenities such as drinking water, sanitation, transport, among others. The other
cities/towns of Bihar included in AMRUT are – Bhagalpur, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Biharsharif, Purnia, Arrah,
Darbhanga, Begusarai, Katihar, Dinapur Nizamat, Saharsa, Munger, Chapra, Dehri, Siwan, Hajipur,
Sasaram, Bettiah, Motihari, Jamalpur, Jehanabad, Bagaha, Kishanganj, Buxar and Aurangabad.
 WB government proposed inland waterways services
The West Bengal government has proposed the introduction of fuel efficient, cost effective and eco-
friendly inland waterways services on 12 rivers in West Bengal to reduce road congestion. The rivers are
Ganga, Bhagirathi, Ajoy, Bakreshwar, Damodar, DVC canal, Rupnarayan, Jalangi, Ichamati, Dwarekeshwar,
Sunderban and Subarnarekha. The waterways will be provided with adequate infrastructure for safe,
convenient and sustained shipping operations as well. Transportation cost on waterways is expected to
be 50 paise per km as against INR 1 per km and INR 1.5 per km by rail and road, respectively.
Industry News
 Centre to develop marinas in Goa
The Ministry of Road Transports and Highways has proposed to develop marinas or small ports to anchor
yachts and small passenger ships in Sancoale and Navshi near Panaji, Goa. Once pending land issues are
sorted out, the project will be initiated. The Ministry is also in favour of sea plane projects and is
considering the possibility of connecting airports and railway stations through waterways, to reduce both
passenger and goods road traffic.

 DoNER outlays INR 55 crore for infrastructure upgradation
The Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Ministry intends an investment worth INR 55 crore
for infrastructure upgradation of Naharlagun and Itanagar. The two major projects are - INR 30 crore RCC
bridge construction over Pachin river, connecting ISBT and Naharlagun Railway Station, and the
construction of bypass roads in the Capital complex Phase I, worth INR 25 crore. The project details have
been forwarded to the Water and Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS) for technical vetting and
verification.
 Metrino work to begin
The Union Government’s 'Metrino' public transport project in Delhi, worth INR 4,000 crore, will
commence in six months. Metrino will enable people to travel in fully automatic, driverless pods
suspended by an electric ropeway 5-10 meters above ground, thereby decongesting roads. The project
has a capital cost of INR 50 crore per km as against the metro’s INR 250 crore. The 70 km long Metrino
project from Dhaulakuan to Manesar in Haryana is expected to be completed in two years time.
