Venturi Mask for Oxygen Delivery Administration
1.
2. • A venturi mask is a medical device used for delivering a
designated oxygen concentration to patients on controlled
oxygen therapy.
• These masks use the Bernoulli principle to entrain room air
when pure oxygen is delivered through a small orifice.
• This results in a large inflow at predictable oxygen
concentration.
• Romsons is a leading medical and surgical device
manufacturing company known for developing high-quality
venturi masks
3. • The original Venturi mask was invented by British physician
Earl James Moran Campbell at McMaster University Medical
School.
• It was named after the Italian physicist Giovanni Battista
Venturi who described the principle of increased velocity of
a gas as resulting in lower pressures.
• Moran Campbell incorporated Venturi's principle to create a
replacement for intermittent oxygen treatment, a practice
he described as "bringing a drowning man to the surface-
occasionally".
• By using this principle, oxygen delivery occurs at precise
concentration, thus, representing the standard of
supplemental oxygen facemasks today.
4. • Medical care providers across the world use various types
of oxygen face-masks to transfer breathing oxygen gas into
the lungs of the patient.
• This type of supportive care is used in the course of oxygen
therapy to prevent excessive CO2 concentration in the
patient's body. It can be administered both at the hospital
as well as the home.
• Oxygen face-masks vary according to the level of their
oxygen flow rates.
5. • Medical practitioners choose them according to their needs
and requirements of the patient.
• Venturi mask is commonly used for oxygen delivery in
patients in whom inappropriately high FiO2 needs to be
avoided.
• Venturi mask is also employed when the practitioner has a
concern about carbon dioxide retention or when respiratory
drive is inconsistent.
6. • A Venturi mask is different from other oxygen masks as it
is more effective at delivering accurate oxygen
concentrations (FiO2). To achieve this, it requires relatively
high oxygen flow rates.
• This is why Venturi masks are considered high-flow oxygen
therapy devices. In these, oxygen is delivered at high
velocity through a small orifice.
• It provides an accurate and constant FiO2 despite varied
respiratory rates and tidal volumes.
7. • A Venturi mask mixes oxygen with room air, creating high-
flow enriched oxygen of a desired concentration. Therefore,
addition of humidification is not needed with this device.
