become self-supporting or completed, or they are incorporated into the finished
work.

• The Dutch city of rotterdam has erected a giant
staircase leading from stationsplein, outside the
entrance of the central station, to the top of the
groot handelsgebouw — an important building in
the city’s history
• The scaffold structure pays homage to rotterdam’s
rebuilding efforts in the wake of the second world
war.
6. • The staircase leads from the central station’s plaza to the top of
the Groot Handelsgebouw connecting the contemporary build
with a historic monument.
• Comprising 180 stairs, the installation offers a progression of
perspectives over the city as one ascends 29 meters to the roof
of the adjacent building. once at the top, a temporary
observation deck overlooks the entire city. in addition, a
rooftop cinema — open especially for the event

story town house fills the exhibition room at MMCA,

• Do Ho Suh’s “Home within Home within Home
within Home within Home” is an immersive,
sculptural space constructed from his craft-
characteristic silk medium.

with an transparent fabric with a special coating of
polyvinyl chloride.
‘Seoul Home’ a replica of a traditional korean style
house, where he was raised as a child. the latter
structure is suspended from the ceiling, floating
between the multi-layered panels of semi-opaque,
jade-colored textiles that encompass it.
Suh’s relocation to America as a student precipitated in him a new concept of the home, defined by the ideas of
transcultural displacement and temporal boundaries. veiled in the mesh sheets and entangled between the inside
and the outside, visitors are left to consider these interpretations over their own, and contemplate the ever-
expanding concept of space.
