Nida is a clever girl. (Girl of what kind?)
He gave me five mangoes. (how many man
goes)
There is a little time for preparation. (how
much time?
 In sentence 1, ‘clever’ shows what kind of girl Nida
is; or, in other words, ‘clever’ describes the girl
Nida.
 In sentence 2, ‘five’ shows how many mangoes
 In sentence 3, ‘little shows how much time there is
for preparation.
 A word used with a noun to describe or point out,
the person, animal, place, or thing which the noun
names, or to tell the number of quality, is called
Adjective.
 so we may define an adjective as a word used
with a noun to add something for its meaning
 An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun.
 Look at the following sentences:-
1- The lazy boy was punished.
2- The boy is lazy.
3-There are three small black wooden chairs in the
room.
 Adjective of Quality or Descriptive Adjective.
 Adjective of Quantity.
 Adjective of Number or Numeral Adjective.
 Definite Numeral Adjectives.
 Indefinite Numeral Adjectives.
 Distributive Numeral Adjectives.
 Demonstrative Adjective.
Shows the quality of a person or thing; as,
 Karachi is a large city.
 He is an honest man.
 Adjectives of Quality answer the question: of what
kind?
 Beautiful big small tall short red
Cheap cheaper Cheapest
Big Bigger biggest
Small smaller Smallest
expensive More expensive Most expensive
good Better Best
bad worse Worst
easy easier Easiest
Poor poorer poorest
 Sara is more taller than fatima.??
 Bill gates is the most richest man in the world.???
 Learning brushski is less easier than learning khwar.??
 This is the beautifulest garden I have ever seen.??
Shows how much of a thing is meant ; as,
I hate some rice.
He showed much patience.
He has little intelligence.
He has lost all his wealth.
You have no sense.
He did not eat any rice.
Shows how many persons or things are meant, or in
what order a person or thing stands ; as,
The hand has five fingers.
There are no picture in this book.
All men must die.
Most boys like cricket.
Adjective of numbers answer the question: how
many.
Which denote an exact number; as,
One, two, three, etc.These are called cardinals.
First second third, etc. These are called ordinals.
 Which do not denote an exact number; as,
 All, no, many, few, some, any, several.
Which refer to each one of a number ; as,
Each boy must take his turn.
Every word of it is false.
On either side is a narrow lane.
 Point out which person or thing is meant ; as,
This boy is stronger than Hari.
These mangoes are sour.
I hate such things.
 (i) Many Adjectives are formed from Nouns. Noun –
Adjective
Boy -- boyish Fool -- foolish Dirt -- dirty
Storm – stormy.
Care -- careful
Pardon -- pardonable
Play -- playful
Laugh -- laughable
Hope -- hopeful
 (ii) Some Adjectives are formed from Verbs.
Verb -- Adjective
Tire -- tireless
Cease -- ceaseless
Talk -- talkative
Move -- moveable
 (iii) Some Adjectives are formed from other Adjectives.
Adjective -- Adjective
Tragic -- tragical
Black -- blackish
Whole -- wholesome
White – whitish
Sick -- sickly
