A word used with a noun to describe or point out , the person,
animal, place or thing which the noun names, or tell the number
or quality, is called an adjective.
So we may define an Adjective as a word used with a noun to
add something for its meaning. Adjective meaning added to.
I. Sara is a clever student. ( Girl of what kind? )
II. He doesn’t like that boy . ( which boy? )
III. Jack gave me four pens ( how many pens?)
IV. There is little time for preparation. ( how much time?)
1) The lazy boy was punished. ( attributively with noun )
2) The girl is lazy. ( predicatively with verb ‘is’ and forms part of the
predicate.
 Show the kind or quality of a person or thing ; as,
a. Karachi is a large city.
b. John is an honest man.
c. The foolish old crow tried to sing.
d. This is a grammar of the English* language.
It answer the question: Of what kind?
a. Adjectives formed from proper nouns ( e.g., French wine,
Turkish tobacco, Indian tea, etc. ) are sometimes called
Proper Adjective
 Show how much of a thing is meant; as,
1. He ate some rice.
2. David showed much patience.
3. Ali has a little intelligence.
4. She has lost all his wealth.
5. You have no sense.
6. She did not eat any grains.
7. Take great care of her health.
8. Sarah claimed her half share of the booty.
9. There has not been sufficient rain this year.
10. The whole sum was expended.
( it answers the question: How much?
 Show how many persons or things are meant, or in what
order a person or thing stands ; as,
1. The hand has five fingers.
2. Few cats like cold water.
3. There are no pictures in this book.
4. I have taught her many things.
5. All students must study hard.
6. Here are some ripe apples.
7. Most girls like travel.
8. There are several mistakes in her paper.
9. Sunday is the first day of the week.
( It answers the question: How many?
 Which denote an exact number; as,
 One , two, three, etc. These are called Cardinals.
 First, second, third, etc. These are called Ordinals.
2. Indefinite Numeral Adjectives
Which do not denote an exact number; as,
All, no; many, few; some, any; certain, several, sundry.
 Which refer to each one of a number; as,
1. Each boy must take his turn.
2. Pakistan expects every man to do his duty.
3. Every word of it false.
4. On either side is a narrow lane.
5. Neither accusation is true.
Adjectives of Quantity Adjectives of Number
I ate some rice in the party.
They have lost all their wealth.
He has no sense.
He did not have any rice.
I have enough money.
Some girls are clever.
All people must follow rules.
There are no tables in the room.
Are there any mango-trees in this
garden?
There are not enough chairs in
this room.
 Point out which person or thing is meant ; as,
1. This girl is wiser than Sarah.
2. That boy is industrious.
3. These oranges are sour.
4. Those rascals must be punished.
5. Yonder fort once belonged to Shah Jahan.
6. Don’t be in such a hurry.
7. She hates such shoes.
( It answers the question: which? )
this & that are used with Singular nouns and these & those
with plural nouns.
 What, which and whose, when they are used with nouns to
ask questions.
1. What manner of man is he?
2. Which way shall we go?
3. Whose book is this?
( what is used in a general sense, and which in a selective
sense. )
 I saw it with my own eyes.
 It was her own idea.
 James was beaten at his own game.
 Mind your own business.
 John is his own master.
 That is the very thing we want.
 “ When all else left my cause,
My very adversary took my part”.
 The word what is sometimes used as an
Exclamatory adjective; as,
1. What genius !
2. What folly !
3. What an idea !
4. What a blessing !
5. What a piece of work is man !

 Later, latter; latest, last — Later and latest refer to time; latter
and last refer to position.
 He is later than I expected.
 I have not heard the latest news.
 The latter chapters are lacking in interest.
 The last chapter is carelessly written.
 Ours is the last house in the street.
 Elder, older ; eldest, oldest —Elder and eldest are used only of
persons, not of animals or things; and are now confined to
members of the same family. Elder is not used with than. Older
and oldest are used of both persons and things.
 John is my elder brother.
 Tom is my eldest son.
 He is older than his sister.
 Rama is the oldest boy in the eleven.
 This is the oldest temple in Kolkata.
 Farther, further — Both farther and further are used to
express distance. Further, not farther, is used to mean
“additional”.
 Kolkata is farther/further from the equator than Colombo.
 After this he made no further remarks.
 I must have a reply without further delay.
 Nearest, next —Nearest means the shortest distance away.
Next refers to one of a sequence of things coming one after
the other.
 Mumbai is the seaport nearest to Europe.
 Where is the nearest phone box?
 Karim’s shop is next to the post office.
 My uncle lives in the next house.
 Some, any—To express quantity or degree some is used
normally in affirmative sentences, any in negative or
interrogative sentences.
 I will buy some mangoes.
 I will not buy any mangoes.
 Have you bought any mangoes ?
But any can be used after if in affirmative sentences.
 If you need any money I will help you.
Some is used in questions which are really offers/requests or
which expect the answer “yes”.
 Will you have some ice—cream? (Offer)
 Could you lend me some money? (Request)
 Did you buy some clothes? (=I expect you did.)
 Each, every.— Each and every are similar in meaning, but
every is a stronger word than each; it means, ‘each without
exception’. Each is used in speaking of two or more things;
every is used only in speaking of more than two. Each directs
attention to the individuals forming any group, every to the
total group. Each is used only when the number in the group
is limited and definite ; every when the number is indefinite.
 Every seat was taken.
 Five boys were seated on each bench.
 Each one of these chairs is broken.
 Leap year falls in every fourth year.
 He came to see us every three days [i.e., once in every period
of three days].
 It rained every day during my holidays.
 I was away ten days and it rained each day.

  • 1. A word used with a noun to describe or point out , the person, animal, place or thing which the noun names, or tell the number or quality, is called an adjective. So we may define an Adjective as a word used with a noun to add something for its meaning. Adjective meaning added to. I. Sara is a clever student. ( Girl of what kind? ) II. He doesn’t like that boy . ( which boy? ) III. Jack gave me four pens ( how many pens?) IV. There is little time for preparation. ( how much time?) 1) The lazy boy was punished. ( attributively with noun ) 2) The girl is lazy. ( predicatively with verb ‘is’ and forms part of the predicate.
  • 2.  Show the kind or quality of a person or thing ; as, a. Karachi is a large city. b. John is an honest man. c. The foolish old crow tried to sing. d. This is a grammar of the English* language. It answer the question: Of what kind? a. Adjectives formed from proper nouns ( e.g., French wine, Turkish tobacco, Indian tea, etc. ) are sometimes called Proper Adjective
  • 3.  Show how much of a thing is meant; as, 1. He ate some rice. 2. David showed much patience. 3. Ali has a little intelligence. 4. She has lost all his wealth. 5. You have no sense. 6. She did not eat any grains. 7. Take great care of her health. 8. Sarah claimed her half share of the booty. 9. There has not been sufficient rain this year. 10. The whole sum was expended. ( it answers the question: How much?
  • 4.  Show how many persons or things are meant, or in what order a person or thing stands ; as, 1. The hand has five fingers. 2. Few cats like cold water. 3. There are no pictures in this book. 4. I have taught her many things. 5. All students must study hard. 6. Here are some ripe apples. 7. Most girls like travel. 8. There are several mistakes in her paper. 9. Sunday is the first day of the week. ( It answers the question: How many?
  • 5.  Which denote an exact number; as,  One , two, three, etc. These are called Cardinals.  First, second, third, etc. These are called Ordinals. 2. Indefinite Numeral Adjectives Which do not denote an exact number; as, All, no; many, few; some, any; certain, several, sundry.
  • 6.  Which refer to each one of a number; as, 1. Each boy must take his turn. 2. Pakistan expects every man to do his duty. 3. Every word of it false. 4. On either side is a narrow lane. 5. Neither accusation is true.
  • 7. Adjectives of Quantity Adjectives of Number I ate some rice in the party. They have lost all their wealth. He has no sense. He did not have any rice. I have enough money. Some girls are clever. All people must follow rules. There are no tables in the room. Are there any mango-trees in this garden? There are not enough chairs in this room.
  • 8.  Point out which person or thing is meant ; as, 1. This girl is wiser than Sarah. 2. That boy is industrious. 3. These oranges are sour. 4. Those rascals must be punished. 5. Yonder fort once belonged to Shah Jahan. 6. Don’t be in such a hurry. 7. She hates such shoes. ( It answers the question: which? ) this & that are used with Singular nouns and these & those with plural nouns.
  • 9.  What, which and whose, when they are used with nouns to ask questions. 1. What manner of man is he? 2. Which way shall we go? 3. Whose book is this? ( what is used in a general sense, and which in a selective sense. )
  • 10.  I saw it with my own eyes.  It was her own idea.  James was beaten at his own game.  Mind your own business.  John is his own master.  That is the very thing we want.  “ When all else left my cause, My very adversary took my part”.
  • 11.  The word what is sometimes used as an Exclamatory adjective; as, 1. What genius ! 2. What folly ! 3. What an idea ! 4. What a blessing ! 5. What a piece of work is man !

  • 16.  Later, latter; latest, last — Later and latest refer to time; latter and last refer to position.  He is later than I expected.  I have not heard the latest news.  The latter chapters are lacking in interest.  The last chapter is carelessly written.  Ours is the last house in the street.  Elder, older ; eldest, oldest —Elder and eldest are used only of persons, not of animals or things; and are now confined to members of the same family. Elder is not used with than. Older and oldest are used of both persons and things.  John is my elder brother.  Tom is my eldest son.  He is older than his sister.  Rama is the oldest boy in the eleven.  This is the oldest temple in Kolkata.
  • 17.  Farther, further — Both farther and further are used to express distance. Further, not farther, is used to mean “additional”.  Kolkata is farther/further from the equator than Colombo.  After this he made no further remarks.  I must have a reply without further delay.  Nearest, next —Nearest means the shortest distance away. Next refers to one of a sequence of things coming one after the other.  Mumbai is the seaport nearest to Europe.  Where is the nearest phone box?  Karim’s shop is next to the post office.  My uncle lives in the next house.
  • 18.  Some, any—To express quantity or degree some is used normally in affirmative sentences, any in negative or interrogative sentences.  I will buy some mangoes.  I will not buy any mangoes.  Have you bought any mangoes ? But any can be used after if in affirmative sentences.  If you need any money I will help you. Some is used in questions which are really offers/requests or which expect the answer “yes”.  Will you have some ice—cream? (Offer)  Could you lend me some money? (Request)  Did you buy some clothes? (=I expect you did.)
  • 19.  Each, every.— Each and every are similar in meaning, but every is a stronger word than each; it means, ‘each without exception’. Each is used in speaking of two or more things; every is used only in speaking of more than two. Each directs attention to the individuals forming any group, every to the total group. Each is used only when the number in the group is limited and definite ; every when the number is indefinite.  Every seat was taken.  Five boys were seated on each bench.  Each one of these chairs is broken.  Leap year falls in every fourth year.  He came to see us every three days [i.e., once in every period of three days].  It rained every day during my holidays.  I was away ten days and it rained each day.
