Delegation
AC Transit
New Supervisor Training
Delegation
 Recognize the benefits of effective
delegation
 Identify what types of tasks can be
delegated
 Learn the key steps in delegating
 Practice delegating a task to an
employee
Learning Objectives
Delegation happens when you give one of
your staff members a task (or part of a task)
to complete which currently you do yourself
What is Delegation?
Benefits of Delegation
You are allowed the time and space to do
the most important parts of the job really well.
You do the work only you can do
Your staff members take charge of some
work which develops their ability and potential
 Employees learn to bring everything to the boss
rather than make an effort to work things
through on their own
 Responsibility and accountability for work is
shifted from employee to supervisor
 The creation of a culture of dependency –
where the employee depends on the supervisor
for everything
When we don’t delegate
Myth 1: There is not enough time to delegate
Myth 2: The staff is not competent enough
Myth 3: If you want it done right, you have to do it
yourself
Myth 4: People will think you’re not on top of things if
you delegate to others
Myth 5: When you are good at something you should
do it yourself
Myths of Delegation
Each table has a myth
Discuss reasons this myth is not a true statement.
Activity- Mythbusters
Level 4 – Best to use with someone who is considered to
be highly skilled and knowledgeable (mastery level) about
the task
Level 3 – Best to use with someone who has actually
demonstrated competence
Level 2 – Best to use with someone who has some
experience and is ready to act on their own
Level 1-Best to use with someone about to
do work they have never or rarely done
