Britney's "Toxic
1.
2. Toxic is a music video that highlights Britneys
transgression into a woman and shows her
interest's adapting and changing as time
goes on. The video demonstrates her
becoming different people, this could be
her wanting to escape her Disney image
and be seen as a mature woman. The
video highlights the songs sexual references
and highlights danger/drug taking which is
different to any other music video/ song she
has done before.
3. The fist costume choice you see is Britney as an air hostess. Her costume however
is not like the usual air hostess clothes, at the time Britney was making this video
she was making the progression from being a young pop star to growing up and
becoming part of the adult world. Her costume demonstrates her feelings towards
growing older and shows her transgressing into a sex symbol.
Her costume completely changes in the next part of the video.
She is wearing a red wig which could either symbolise danger or
passion, this can show that she has many different styles and she
is once again forcing the audience into seeing her differently as
a more grown up and sexually sophisticated woman.
One of the last scenes in the music video is of Britney climbing a building to
seduce and poison the man inside. This can suggest her uphill battle with the
media, career and relationships. Here she has dark brown/black hair which can
suggest mystery and evil which is relevant as her aim is to poison the man inside.
Her stomach exposed and she has black leather gloves on. This costume, again,
has sexual connotations to the dark and dangerous character that she is
portraying.
4. Britney is the focus of the music video. Throughout the
video she is featured in close ups and mid shots. The
camera is always centred on the star of the video
which in this case is Britney. All the long shots that
were used were shown to illustrate some kind of
triumph for example the pleasure she gets from riding
the motor cycle. It was also used to show off her
body which you see through her costume choices,
the midriff of the superhero at the end, the shortness
of the air hostess outfit. Long shots were also used to
show off her dancing skills. Any other
performers in the video (the other air
hostesses for example) are kept to a
minimum and in the background, so
that the focus is on Britney.
5. Editing mirrors the fast beat of the song so
that the style is rapid and consistent. Most
music videos that are pop in the variety
employ this technique and Toxic is very
conventional in this manner. The editing is in
sync with the song lyrics, for example the
first lyric is "baby can't you see
I'm calling" and she is on the
telephone whilst she is singing
this lyric and it is used to make
the lyrics and music video correlate.
