1. Sia-Elastic Heart
popBoth characters in this music video are
barely wearing anything and they are
both wearing rough costumes. But what
makes this video hard to watch is the
fact that one of the dancers is about 12
years old and the other is a half naked
grown man. This video is made in a
unique way suggesting the
representation of the artist is a creative
singer.
There are stereotypes In this video
but it doesn’t suggest that the fit
the genre. The man in the video
shows rage and the fact that he’s
wearing roughed up shorts suggest
men are like animals because he
cannot control his temper and
dances around like a beast.
From this video we can see that this might have been
sexualised considering the layer of skin shown described
by Shuker’s theory that women in music videos are
represented as eye candy for a male audience. The way
they used a two person shot to capture both character
close together suggests that it could be sexualised for
some viewers but the fact there is a massive age
difference can make this unconfutable for people to
watch.
Pop music is stereotypically about
relationships which in this music video we
can see a relationship between a father
and daughter
2. The instant quick planning shot of the women sexually
being held by Robin Thicke grabs the audiences
attention as they figure out the binary opposition
which is countertypes vs stereotypes and male vs
female. Throughout the music video we see a lot of
sexual content which the women are half naked. The
women in this video are wearing clothes that arte
white which connotes innocence.
Throughout the music video, the Mise en scene has been
based on one set. The background is light pink
throughout the whole video which could be a stereotype
for women as the colour pink is a connotation for
women. This can also be seen as feminism as the music
video has been targeted to at women who struggle to
obtain equality rights in society.
This is a form of indexical signs as the women in the
music video is lighting a cigarette for the male character
which leads to smoke and also is a form of stereotype
as women being taken for advantage. The sexual, bite
lipping face the female character is making sexual and
provocative to men which Laura Mulvey’s theory
suggest that the make gaze is a key aspect in the music
video.

3. This video highly focuses on Laura Mulvey's male gaze whereby Nicki
Minaj has chosen to dress in very revealing and provocative clothing.
The camera focuses on the curves of the female body and there is a link
between lyrics and the music video as she sings about promiscuous
behaviour whilst dressing in a similar fashion. There is the suggestion
therefore that this music video is mainly aimed at males. I do feel as
though due to Nicki Minaj being a very well known artist, she is more
than aware millions of people would view this music video and so she
intended to convey herself in this way.
She portrays women including herself in a
very sexualized manner as she self-
objectifies throughout the music video. In
my opinion I believe that this behaviour is a
step back for women as this reduces women
to the status of objects.
I personally do not feel there was much purpose in her
creating this music video as she is already a self-made
international superstar, well known for her rapping.
Everything in a music video is a choice from the first move
to the last edit, and her reasons for creating this may have
been that she knew sexual content sells to the consumer,
and her being a massive superstar suggests that her
intentions of selling a big hit record were apparent.
