Safety Policies: Developing and implementing safety policies helps employers reduce accident-related costs
and prevent losses due to a decline in productivity. The safety officer determines what policies are needed and
solicits input from managers and workers. Once a policy has been finalized, the safety officer alerts workers
about the change and monitors compliance. He may also ask each employee to sign a statement
acknowledging receipt of the information.
Workplace Inspections: Safety officers inspect interior and exterior work areas to determine if there are any
safety hazards. During these inspections, a safety officer looks for broken equipment and damaged equipment,
slip-and-fall hazards and other potential hazards. The officer also observes workers to ensure that they are
wearing required personal protective equipment and following company safety policies. In the construction
industry, safety officers check the stability of scaffolding, ensure that workers use hard hats and protective
footwear, and check to make sure employees operate construction equipment in a safe manner.
Accident Investigations: When a workplace accident occurs, a safety officer conducts an investigation to
determine why the accident happened. The officer may question witnesses, inspect the accident scene and t
ake pictures of any property damage. Once the officer determines the cause of the accident, he writes a report
detailing the cause and provides recommendations that can help prevent future accidents.
Training and Coaching: OHS Act requires employers to provide training on dozens of safety topics. These
include fire prevention plans, hazardous materials handling and machine guarding. Safety officers identify
training needs, develop appropriate training programs and deliver training to employees. They may also solicit
feedback from workers and use that feedback to improve existing programs or create new ones.
Regulatory Compliance: Employers must comply with regulations published by OHS Act and state

5. Greenville Trading (North Park Offices -Dept. of Agriculture, Richards Bay): We worked on
this site while construction was on going and maintained the file work (Note of construction, letter of good standing
etc.) and ensured that all staff were issued correct PPE and all health and safety methods and functions were
followed. After completion and occupation of new office blocks we are now doing monthly audits and consulting
on the site Greenmile Investments (Bhambanana, Emangusi and Mkuze): these sites are all in the same area so we
maintain the site safety files and recommend signage for all three sites when job scope changes. Induction for new
contractors are done and weekly scaffolding inspections are done with the green tag system. These sites are all
construction of office blocks.
Greenmile Investments (Department of Sports and Recreation, Richards Bay): We have just
issued a new health and safety file for this site. This site has ongoing maintenance but also has been occupied by the
department of Sport and UNISA so the safety of the public is a concern and we have ensured that all staff have been
trained and informed about the hazards of working in a public area.
Siyazama Warehouse Extension (Richards Bay): We have issued a file for this site and are in charge of
the risk management. Scaffolding erectors and inspectors are provided if requested as requested for this site. Earth
Movers are present so checklists have been drawn up and risk assessments have been done to prevent
occupational hazards and incidents from occurring.
Emric Motors - Total Garage (Tanner Road Empangeni), Greenmile Investments - Total
Garage ( Mtubatuba): We maintain the Health and Safety files for both these petrol stations. We provide a
consulting service as well to assist with the health and safety on site and work hand in hand with the Total South
Africa auditors to ensure the highest level of safety is achieved and maintained.
Zidedele Logistics Solutions: This is the first site we worked on and still do monthly reports and inspections
(fire equipment, medicals and general tools inspections). This company was only awarded a 3 star rating before
we were requested to assist with their safety. They have now been awarded a 5 star rating by Technilaw and
continue to strive for health and safety excellence.
Mtubatuba Mall: We worked with the Foreman to ensure that the safety standards were maintained as it was a
big project and now of completion do monthly audits and issue letter of non-conformance to store occupants
that do not follow required Health and safety practices.
