2. Pioneer of Modernism
Paintings, at this time, were real. They pictured a real
person or a popular story.
Marc Chagall’s modern art was colorful, unique and a
dreamlike imagery.
Often interesting objects were floating in the sky.
Chagall painted stories with his paintings. People felt
happy when they looked at them.
He painted many images from his Jewish upbringing in
Russia.
He used a variety of modern styles such as cubism,
surrealism, symbolism, etc.
3. About Marc Chagall 1887-1985
Born in Russia
Oldest of 9 children.
Father was a poor herring (fish) merchant.
Mother kept a small shop in the front room.
Painted at a very young age.
Went to art school, for free because of his great talent.
Because he was poor, he would paint on old curtains or shirts.
Met his wife Bella, who was in many of his paintings
Had one daughter, with Bella, named Ida. He also had a son.
Left France during the war and moved to New York. Later, he moved
back to France.
Illustrated, painted, created stained glass, stage sets and prints.
Was considered to be one of the greatest artists of the twentieth
century.
