2. Pioneer of Modernism
 Paintings, at this time, were real. They pictured a real
person or a popular story.
 Marc Chagall’s modern art was colorful, unique and a
dreamlike imagery.
 Often interesting objects were floating in the sky.
 Chagall painted stories with his paintings. People felt
happy when they looked at them.
 He painted many images from his Jewish upbringing in
Russia.
 He used a variety of modern styles such as cubism,
surrealism, symbolism, etc.

3. About Marc Chagall 1887-1985
 Born in Russia
 Oldest of 9 children.
 Father was a poor herring (fish) merchant.
 Mother kept a small shop in the front room.
 Painted at a very young age.
 Went to art school, for free because of his great talent.
 Because he was poor, he would paint on old curtains or shirts.
 Met his wife Bella, who was in many of his paintings
 Had one daughter, with Bella, named Ida. He also had a son.
 Left France during the war and moved to New York. Later, he moved
back to France.
 Illustrated, painted, created stained glass, stage sets and prints.
 Was considered to be one of the greatest artists of the twentieth
century.
