Separation of Lanthanides/ Lanthanides and Actinides
Ancillary texts planning
1.
2. In order to plan my ancillary texts e.g. Digipak and magazine advertisement of my music
video, I conducted research into my music genre which is R&B/Soul and researched the
conventions that similar products apply when planning and making these. This therefore
would help and assist me in the construction of both ancillary texts by guidance and ideas
from other existing and similar products of my genre. I’ve also had to look at what makes a
digipak and magazine advert and the elements both of these have.
3. DIGIPAK - DESIGN SAMPLE
I decided to make a 6-panel, 1 disc digipak that would simplistically interrelate with my
music video. Most digipaks are 4-panels but I’ve decided to challenge the most popular
and opt for a 6-panel because I could include more iconography into the digipak in
order to attract more fans and buyers in buying it.

5. DIGIPAK - FONT PLANNING
When researching some fonts
I’ve decided I wanted to use an
antique, old style, classic font.
This is because I wanted my
digipak to have some Soul
elements since the predominant
genre was R&B. Mixing both
genres in the digipak would also
be interesting to combine as is
not as common now to see this
combined.
6. DIGIPAK - ICONOGRAPHY PLANNING
Having researched through different
digipak cover on the same genre was me,
I was able to plan my own digipak cover.
The most often used image used as the
front cover was often a close up of the
artist’s face (see my R&B/Soul digipak
conventions presentation). This was so
the first cover of the digipak is memorable
and iconic to the buyer to the first time
they see it.
However in my digipak I wanted to have a
link with my video, so I decided I was
going to take shots from my music video
and related and make them my front
cover. This would involve mise en scene
such as location showing as well as the
artist, which would challenge my genre to
a certain extent.
7. OTHER
In most R&B/Urban albums there’s a
‘Parental Advisory Explicit Content’ sticker,
which states “the Parental Advisory is a notice
to consumers that recordings identified by this
logo may contain strong language or depictions of
violence, sex or substance abuse.”
“Parental discretion is advised. Individual record
companies and artists are free to decide which of
their releases should receive a “PAL Notice”
indicating that the release contains explicit
content.” This corresponds with my planned
aimed target audience aged between 16-18
and perhaps in their 20’s, that my product
would be aimed at and not at young people
under 15, as parents may supervise what
music their children listen to and what
music videos they watch.
8. ADVERT – FONT PLANNING
For the magazine advert I wanted to use a
large, bold font in order to attract the
readers eyes’. In order to fit the genre in my
advert I decided to use Retro fonts to
continue with the link between both genres.

9. ADVERT – ICONOGRAPHY PLANNING
In common R&B magazine such as
Vibe, the main image on the cover is
mostly often a women of ethnic
background (as seen in the example),
half naked or partially naked. This
creates a ‘male gaze’ where male
readers will buy the magazine to just
stare at the women. However her
pose and stance, also provoke this
gaze, insinuating at any time if she
stands up she’ll expose her body
(which the readers might of wish). Her
facial expression also suggest a tease
and sexual appeal to attract buyers.
10. MY ADVERT
However, I decided to challenge the traditional image
in R&B magazine cover and opted for a more lay
back, chilled image which would fit the genre.
The reasons behind was because I wanted to show a
improved portrayal of women in a fun and youthful
representation.
11. OTHER
Also in my magazine advert I’ve inserted social
networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter
with links, so that the target audience can interact
with the latest information and updates about the
artist through social media. This is also reassuring
to the advertisement of the artist and album as it’s
promoting the album to an online age where the
main users are teenagers between 14-25
demographics and use these networking sites
daily.
