Summary of topic For my factual project,Iam goingto be making
a fanzine discussingthe downsidesof the music
industry.Inthismagazine there willbe articles
discussingissuessuchashow damagingthe
musicindustrycan be,recordlabels,womenin
the musicindustryandI am hopingto include an
interview withanindependentartistor
someone whopreviouslyworkedinindustryto
talkabout theirexperience.
Whythis topic/subject I chose thistopicbecause I love listeningto
musicand learningaboutthe industry. Aside
frommedia/graphicdesign,musicisone of my
mainpassionsandhobbies.Ithoughtthistopic
wouldbe beneficial asIwill be workingon
somethingIam interestedandpassionate
about,as well aslearnmore informationand
educate otherswiththisfanzine.
What is the purpose ofthis project, or what is
the pointof it? [youcan phrase thisas a point

The purpose of thisfactual projectis to create a
piece of workthat can educate myself and
otherson a topic,as well asdemonstrate skills
usingsoftware tocreate this.
The purpose of me choosingthe musicindustry
as my topicisso I can educate myself more on
the downsidesof thisindustry,andthenpassing
on thisinformationand knowledgetothe
audience thatwouldalsolike tolearnmore
aboutit. The musicindustry oftenappearsas
thisglamourous industryfull of wealth,fame
and success,myfanzine will giveanopposing
argumentandperspective tothatto show the
audience thatthere canalso be strugglesand
issuesinthisindustrythatartistshave to deal
with,andthat thisindustrymaynot be as easy
to be in as itappears.

My targetaudience wouldbe similartothe
intendedaudience forthe magazine/fanzinesI
have beenresearching.Iwill be targetingmy
fanzine toa youngerage group around18-25.
The magazine will alsobe targetedtomusic
enthusiasts,aswell asanyone aspiringtowork
inthe musicindustry. The designstyleIwould
like myfanzine tohave will be similarto‘DIY
Magazine’and‘Loud andQuietMagazine’that I
have been researching.Thesemagazinesand
frontcovers have a clean,neatstyle,butalso
have brightand boldfontsandcolouredimages

to make themstandout. The cover image isthe
focusof the magazine coverwhilstthe restof
the cover iskeptcleanand minimalistic. These
magazinesare cateredto the same audience as
my target,ages18-25 andoverall music
enthusiasts.

talkto, etc]
For my interview article,I amintendingon
speakingtoa small,more underground
independentartist.IthinkIwill have the best
chance contactingthemthrough social media
platforms.Wheninterviewing them, I will ask
themquestionsabouttheirpersonalexperience
inthe musicindustrysofar andtheirstruggles
withrecordlabelsandattractinga wider
audience independently. If Iam unable to
contact an artist,I will thenresearchand
contact people suchasex- managersor people
that once workedinthe musicindustrythatcan
talkabout theirexperiences.

well asdeveloping new skills.Iwill alsogetto
experimentwithadifferentstyleof magazine

Summary of topic For my factual project,Iam goingto be making a fanzine discussingthe downsidesof the music industry.Inthismagazine there willbe articles discussingissuessuchashow damagingthe musicindustrycan be,recordlabels,womenin the musicindustryandI am hopingto include an interview withanindependentartistor someone whopreviouslyworkedinindustryto talkabout theirexperience. Whythis topic/subject I chose thistopicbecause I love listeningto musicand learningaboutthe industry. Aside frommedia/graphicdesign,musicisone of my mainpassionsandhobbies.Ithoughtthistopic wouldbe beneficial asIwill be workingon somethingIam interestedandpassionate about,as well aslearnmore informationand educate otherswiththisfanzine. What is the purpose ofthis project, or what is the pointof it? [youcan phrase thisas a point to getacross, a central argument,etc] The purpose of thisfactual projectis to create a piece of workthat can educate myself and otherson a topic,as well asdemonstrate skills usingsoftware tocreate this. The purpose of me choosingthe musicindustry as my topicisso I can educate myself more on the downsidesof thisindustry,andthenpassing on thisinformationand knowledgetothe audience thatwouldalsolike tolearnmore aboutit. The musicindustry oftenappearsas thisglamourous industryfull of wealth,fame and success,myfanzine will giveanopposing argumentandperspective tothatto show the audience thatthere canalso be strugglesand issuesinthisindustrythatartistshave to deal with,andthat thisindustrymaynot be as easy to be in as itappears. Intendedaudience and how are you designing your project to appeal to that audience – reference stylisticchoicesand intentionshere My targetaudience wouldbe similartothe intendedaudience forthe magazine/fanzinesI have beenresearching.Iwill be targetingmy fanzine toa youngerage group around18-25. The magazine will alsobe targetedtomusic enthusiasts,aswell asanyone aspiringtowork inthe musicindustry. The designstyleIwould like myfanzine tohave will be similarto‘DIY Magazine’and‘Loud andQuietMagazine’that I have been researching.Thesemagazinesand frontcovers have a clean,neatstyle,butalso have brightand boldfontsandcolouredimages

These magazinesare cateredto the same audience as my target,ages18-25 andoverall music enthusiasts. Intendedcontributors [whowill youinterview, talkto, etc] For my interview article,I amintendingon speakingtoa small,more underground independentartist.IthinkIwill have the best chance contactingthemthrough social media platforms.Wheninterviewing them, I will ask themquestionsabouttheirpersonalexperience inthe musicindustrysofar andtheirstruggles withrecordlabelsandattractinga wider audience independently. If Iam unable to contact an artist,I will thenresearchand contact people suchasex- managersor people that once workedinthe musicindustrythatcan talkabout theirexperiences. Pg. 1-2- Page 1 will have anoverviewtalking aboutthe musicindustryasa whole and introducingthe focusof the fanzine,‘the dark sidesof the musicindustry’.Page 2will show the contentsand page numbersof eachof the articles. Pg. 3-4- Page 3 will be talkingaboutrecord labelsandthe downsidestoartistsbeingtiedto a label.There will be referencesandquotesto whatother artistshave saidabouttheir

Pg. 5-6- Double page spread,interview with independentartist. Page 5will have amore enlargedimage of the artist,aswell asan overview of the artistandwhatkindof music theymake. Page 6 will have the mainbulkof the interview andwillmostlikelybe writtenina ‘q&a’format. Pg. 7-8- Page 7 and8 will be talkingabout womeninthe industryandhow theyoftenhave to re-inventthemselves orhave apersonawith visuals,costumesandchoreographyinorder to stay relevant. Pg. 9-10- ‘Do streamingserviceshelporhinder the musicindustryandartists?’ For page 9 and 10, I will be talkingaboutthe rise of streaming servicessuchasSpotify,Apple Musicetc.And how theyhave affectedthe musicindustry. Pg. 11-12- Forthese pagesI will be discussing social media’simpactonthe musicindustry.I will talkabouthow itbenefits, aswell asthe disadvantages.Iwill alsowriteaboutTikTok’s influenceonthe musicindustry,andhow fast pacedtrendscome and go because of this. How does your chosenmedium/format linkto your specialism? As myspecialismforthisyearisgraphicdesign,I feltthatchoosinga fanzine formyfactual projectwouldbe the mostsuitedasopposedto a videoor podcast.Thisisbecause I will be mainlyworkingonPhotoshopandcreatinga ‘print’project.Thiswill alsobenefitme asI will be demonstratingavarietyof skillsin printas well asdeveloping new skills.Iwill alsogetto experimentwithadifferentstyleof magazine and colourssoI will have avariationof stylesto show inmy portfolio.
