The SUNY Broome Veterans & Military Affairs Office coordinates services for over 110 veterans attending classes and receiving VA education benefits. It acts as a liaison between SUNY Broome and the VA regional office to process benefit payments. The office provides referrals for counseling and information on resources and assists veterans with applying for benefits, transferring credits, and obtaining military transcripts.

SUNY Broome is approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as a training facility for veterans and other eligible
students. The Veterans & Military Affairs Office currently coordinates services for more than 110 veterans who are
attending classes and receiving Veteran’s education benefits; referrals for counseling for financial, vocational and academic
problems; veterans work-study job information; and important information about resources available to them at the college.
This office acts as a direct liaison between SUNY Broome Community College and the Veterans Administration Regional
Office in Buffalo regarding payment of benefits.

It is the responsibility of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to approve applications and to make decisions regarding
payment, issuance of checks, and eligibility.

4. HOW TO APPLY FOR VA EDUCATION BENEFITS
● Determine which benefit is best for you: Use the GI Bill® Road Map for Success or call the VA at 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-
888-442-4551).
● Apply for your Veterans Education Benefits through the VA by using the Veterans Online Application.
● Submit a copy of DD-214 (Member Copy 4), or if drilling with the Reserve or Guard, submit a copy of Notice of Basic
Eligibility (Form: DD-2384) from Reserve or Guard Unit Officer.
● Submit a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility letter, copy of your current Concise Class Schedule and a completed
SUNY Broome Veterans Educational Benefits Request Form (pdf)to the Veterans & Military Affairs Office located in the
Student Services Building, Room 102.
● Transferring Veterans (previously received MGIB from another school) must submit VA form 22-1995.
● Transferring dependents of Veterans (previously received MGIB from another school) must also submit VA form 22-
5495.
● It is recommended that you apply for federal student aid by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid at
fafsa.gov. For SUNY BCC to receive your application data you must include our school code, 002862, as one of the
schools you plan to attend.

5. OBTAINING MILITARY TRANSCRIPTS AND
TRANSFER CREDITS
All veterans and dependents of veterans applying for educational benefits must submit official transcripts from all previous
colleges/universities they attended for evaluation.
Request an official copy of your military transcripts be sent to the SUNY Broome Community College Registrar’s Office.
