2. WORKSHOP FOR SP TEACHERS
•TEACHING WRITING AS A PROCESS
APPROACH RATHER THAN A PRODUCT
APPROACH
3. CAPS – ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE - SP
• PAST : Product Approach was predominantly used by teachers - focus was on final
submission
• CAPS pg 10 : “ the teaching of writing does not focus on the product only but also focus on the
process of writing. During process writing learners are taught how to generate ideas, to think
about the purpose and audience, to write drafts, to edit their work and to present a written
product that communicates their thoughts.”
• Steps for the process approach are outlined and explained on pg 36/37 of the CAPS
document.
• These include : Brainstorming, drafting, editing and presenting.

gather information .Example: Focus on Instruction words, Content words and Limiting
words and jot down ideas.
• Drafting : Put your ideas into sentences and paragraphs - creating a first version – Rough
draft. Example : Outline the content of each paragraph
• Revising: 3R’s – Reorder, Remove and Rewrite. Create content flow and add Substance-
Looking at the big picture – Example : Can use peers/teacher to revise
6. STAGES:
• Editing : Check for errors, read it out loud to notice spelling and grammatical errors
Example: u will analyze each sentence carefully making sure that it serves its purpose .

11. BENEFITS OF TEACHING WRITING AS A PROCESS
• "Writing is not just a process of creation. It is also a process of self-
discovery." —Cristina Istrati . With process writing the writer learns more.
• Students can think as they write.
• The process approach allows feedback, criticism and discussion. This ultimately
makes the writing more meaningful and powerful. It also improves the quality of
the final product.
• It reduces anxiety and stress around writing. It becomes a more pleasant
experience for learners.
12. DISADVANTAGES OF TEACHING WRITING AS A
PROCESS:
• Process writing is time consuming. In South-Africa we have high classroom numbers (40-
50 pupils ).The teacher is not able to give proper feedback and assistance to each
learner.
• Process writing puts less attention on grammar and structure.
• In the final exam there is only an opportunity for a single draft. Learners are used to
multiple drafts. As a result learners may perform poorly.
• Learners are not competent to write under pressure.
13. v CONCLUSION:
-PROCESS WRITING IS A PRODUCTIVE AND EFFECTIVE METHOD OF WRITING.
-THE FACT THAT WE RARELY PRODUCE OUR FINEST WORK ON THE FIRST DRAFT
EXPLAINS WHY PROCESS WRITING IS SO EFFECTIVE.
-TEACHERS WOULD ADD VALUE TO LEARNING BY IMPLEMENTING THIS
APPROACH !
Hope you enjoyed and benefitted from this
presentation.
Thank you for your attention
