WORKSHOP FOR SP TEACHERS
•TEACHING WRITING AS A PROCESS
APPROACH RATHER THAN A PRODUCT
APPROACH
CAPS – ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE - SP
• PAST : Product Approach was predominantly used by teachers - focus was on final
submission
• CAPS pg 10 : “ the teaching of writing does not focus on the product only but also focus on the
process of writing. During process writing learners are taught how to generate ideas, to think
about the purpose and audience, to write drafts, to edit their work and to present a written
product that communicates their thoughts.”
• Steps for the process approach are outlined and explained on pg 36/37 of the CAPS
document.
• These include : Brainstorming, drafting, editing and presenting.
PROCESS WRITING STAGES:
Prewriting Drafting Revising Editing
Proof
Reading
Presenting
STAGES:
• Pre-writing : Brainstorming, analyzing the topic, having a plan , identifying the audience,
gather information .Example: Focus on Instruction words, Content words and Limiting
words and jot down ideas.
• Drafting : Put your ideas into sentences and paragraphs - creating a first version – Rough
draft. Example : Outline the content of each paragraph
• Revising: 3R’s – Reorder, Remove and Rewrite. Create content flow and add Substance-
Looking at the big picture – Example : Can use peers/teacher to revise
STAGES:
• Editing : Check for errors, read it out loud to notice spelling and grammatical errors
Example: u will analyze each sentence carefully making sure that it serves its purpose .
• Proof Reading: Focus on surface errors such as spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Example : You may use Grammarly (website) to point out errors.
• Presenting: Making a final and error free copy – Sharing of your writing .For example ( it
must be neatly typed within the length limits.
TRANSACTIONAL WRITING:
• Non-Fiction
• Communication with a purpose :To persuade, argue, inform or advise.
• CAPS: Writing process to produce well organised, grammatically correct writing texts.
• PG 42- 48 provides a list with a details on how to teach each text . It includes a contract,
Letter, Report, Diary-Entry, Flyer, Form.
• Word count : Grade 7 = 100-120 words
Grade 8 = 120-140 words
Grade 9 = 140-160 words
• Grade 7-9 Transactional texts count 10 % of the exam mark for mid-year and finals.
ESSAY WRITING:
• An Essay is a short piece of writing on a particular topic. Its purpose is to inform or to persuade. It
tries to make a point and to lead to a conclusion.
• An Essay is non-fictional – as opposed to a short story which is fictional.
• CAPS refers to the following types of essays: Narrative, Descriptive, Argumentative, Discursive,
Reflective and Expository.
• Word count : Grade 7 = 150-200 words
Grade 8 = 200-250 words
Grade 9 = 250-300 words
• Grade 7-9 Essay writing counts 20 % of the exam mark for mid-year and finals.
APPLICATION OF PROCESS APPROACH – NARRATIVE ESSAY
TOPIC: AN EMBARRASSING STORY THAT HAPPENED TO YOU
• Prewriting: Create a basic plot for your story. Brainstorm, list the sequence of events,
create a framework for the outline of the essay.
• Drafting: produce a rough draft. Ensure that each paragaraph has a central focus.
• Revising: Find potential areas of improvement. Add or remove content.
• Editing: Focus on grammar, clarity, flow of information.
• Proof Reading: Read the story out loud. Fix pronunciation, errors, missing words.
• Presenting:Type out final essay neatly and ensure that word count is within the limit.
APPLICATION OF PROCESS APPROACH: FRIENDLY LETTER
TOPIC: LETTER TO YOUR 12 YEAR OLD SISTER TELLING HER ABOUT HOW YOU SAVED A CHILD FROM
DROWNING AT THE BEACH.
• Prewriting: Brainstorm your thoughts, Free write the order of events of the story. Focus on age of
recipient and the level of language you will use.
• Drafting: Organize your ideas, get them on to paper , intro-body-conclusion,
• Revising: Rewrite in correct letter format to include address, date, signature etc. Ensure that
sequence of events are correct.
• Editing: Read the letter out loud to a friend to make sure that it makes sense and has a flow.
• Proof Reading: Ensure that spelling, punctuation etc are correct. Confirm address of recipient.
• Presenting: Put letter in an envelope With sender and receiver’s addresses add stamp and post it
off.
BENEFITS OF TEACHING WRITING AS A PROCESS
• "Writing is not just a process of creation. It is also a process of self-
discovery." —Cristina Istrati . With process writing the writer learns more.
• Students can think as they write.
• The process approach allows feedback, criticism and discussion. This ultimately
makes the writing more meaningful and powerful. It also improves the quality of
the final product.
• It reduces anxiety and stress around writing. It becomes a more pleasant
experience for learners.
DISADVANTAGES OF TEACHING WRITING AS A
PROCESS:
• Process writing is time consuming. In South-Africa we have high classroom numbers (40-
50 pupils ).The teacher is not able to give proper feedback and assistance to each
learner.
• Process writing puts less attention on grammar and structure.
• In the final exam there is only an opportunity for a single draft. Learners are used to
multiple drafts. As a result learners may perform poorly.
• Learners are not competent to write under pressure.
v CONCLUSION:
-PROCESS WRITING IS A PRODUCTIVE AND EFFECTIVE METHOD OF WRITING.
-THE FACT THAT WE RARELY PRODUCE OUR FINEST WORK ON THE FIRST DRAFT
EXPLAINS WHY PROCESS WRITING IS SO EFFECTIVE.
-TEACHERS WOULD ADD VALUE TO LEARNING BY IMPLEMENTING THIS
APPROACH !
Hope you enjoyed and benefitted from this
presentation.
Thank you for your attention
QUESTIONS FOR TEACHERS:
• 1. Practically in the classroom situation, do you use a product or a process approach at
present?
• 2. Given the learning situation in SA today (crowded classrooms, disruptive learners)- Do
you believe that its possible to effectively apply the process approach in SA schools?
• 3.What would be your greatest challenge personally regarding this approach?
