3. What is Influenza pandemic?
● A pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new disease.
An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus emerges and
spreads around the world, and most people do not have immunity. Viruses
that have caused past pandemics typically originated from animal influenza
viruses.
● 3 types, A, B and C are known to affect people
● Transmitted by air
Symptoms can go from mild to severe
● Mild: Fever, runny nose, sore throat, pains, headaches, fatigue
● Severe: Viral pneumonia, bacterial pneumonia, sinus infections, asthma,
heart failure

Spreads in a yearly outbreak
Responsible for 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness
per year
Causes 250,000 to 500,000 deaths per year
Can infect pigs, horses and birds
Evolves rapidly to become drug resistant, causing
troubles to make new and effective drugs
